New Downtown Eastside Research Access Portal Takes Collaborative Approach to Open Access (A. Moorhouse, UBC Libraries, October 22) 
This article profiles the Downtown Eastside Research Access Portal (DTES RAP), a research project led by the UBC Learning Exchange in partnership with UBC Library’s Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, which aims to ensure the participating community central to this research has access to the results of the project’s research. IFLA Signs Joint Statement with IATUL on Publisher Pricing (IFLA, October 23)

UN Agency Chiefs Appeal for ‘Open Science’ beyond COVID-19, Citing Dangers of Secrecy and Denial (UN News, October 27)
The heads of UN agencies UNESCO, WHO, and OHCHR “joined forces on Tuesday to appeal for a global push towards ‘open science’, citing the value of cooperation in the response to COVID-19 and the dangers of treating evidence-based knowledge as an exclusive asset, or simple matter of opinion.” Read more

Statement on Final NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing (NIH, October 29)
NIH has released a revision to their Policy for Data Management and Sharing. “This policy requires researchers to plan prospectively for managing and sharing scientific data generated with NIH funds. This policy also establishes the baseline expectation that data sharing is a fundamental component of the research process, which is in line with NIH’s longstanding commitment to making the research it funds available to the public.” Read more

Test 6 Underway and Toolkit Materials Available (OCLC REALM Project, October 22)

Research Article (Preprint): Delivering Bad News: Crisis Communication Methods in Academic Libraries (B. O’Neill & R. Kelley)
“This exploratory study analyzed the specific crisis communication methods of academic libraries” and found that respondents were more likely to communicate quickly when faced with minor crises “but were more hesitant for crises that may have presented the potential for reputational harm.” The authors recommend that academic libraries should consider proactively developing crisis communication plans. Read more

Academic Librarians Examination of University Students’ and Faculty’s Perceptions of Open Educational Resources (L. Fischer, O. Belikov, T. K. Ikahihifo, J. Hilton III, D. Wiley, & M. Troy Martin, Open Praxis, Volume 12, Issue 3, July-Sept 2020)
This article reports on the findings of “a survey of 2,574 students and 1,157 faculty members across ten institutions of postsecondary education in the state of Utah” that aimed “to understand the influence of textbook costs on student academic behavior and the viability of faculty adopting open educational resources (OER) as a solution to the cost of textbooks and the possible need for librarian support of OER.” Read more
