Reopening, Voting, and Dodgers—oh my!

The emotional rollercoaster that is 2020 continues as we celebrate Los Angeles’ second championship title of the year, while still working tirelessly to bring our kids safely back to school, preparing for a potential third wave of COVID cases, and encouraging everyone to get out and vote in this election.

While current case levels prevent us from reopening schools for now, our priority will always be meeting the needs of our kids, families, and school communities. I have been advocating for the District to expand existing optional childcare and tutoring programs to support as many families as we can—and I’m proud to share the District’s latest effort to provide a supervised place to study, access to child care and one-on-one tutoring, and care packages to our students in foster care or experiencing homelessness.

Of course, there is no replacement for the in-person instruction our kids need, and while we continue doing everything we can to keep our kids learning right now, we are busy planning for the day we can safely reopen our campuses for hybrid instruction. I will be joined by Supt. Beutner for my next virtual town hall on November 9th to share more details and answer your questions about our reopening efforts. Click here to register and submit any questions ahead of time.

I hope you will join us for that conversation, and I hope you will also join the millions of Americans exercising their civic duty in this election. You can find more information about early voting, polling locations, and learn more about Measure RR, the LA Unified School Upgrades and Safety Measure, here.

BD4's Virtual Spook-tacular!
I know many of your kids are disappointed about necessary safety precautions putting a damper on this year’s Halloween festivities, so my office is hosting a virtual costume contest to give all our students a chance to show off their costumes--and maybe even win a prize!

Whether it's around campus, in classrooms, or over Zoom, we are doing our best to provide support, answer questions, and address concerns as our semester of remote learning continues. We all want to get back to school as soon as possible, but I have been particularly excited to see the work to modernize our schools make incredible progress during this time!
School Spotlight: Congrats to our new STEM Certified schools!
LA Unified's recent STEM Certification program was designed to ensure high-quality instruction by expanding a seal of approval process for schools specializing in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). This year we welcome 7 new schools into the program, including Cowan Ave ES and Melrose Ave ES in Board District 4! Congratulations to all our newly certified schools that join a total of 41 schools embracing a STEM education.

Help us support students who no longer have the benefit of being in school every day: LAUSD started this fund with community partners to help provide meals and urgently needed supplies, provide devices, digital libraries, and books, and help students to continue learning. You can also donate here to help families with the basics, like rent, food, and childcare.
