New books in new shops

I've enjoyed building my online book business, which brings my work to book lovers around the world. But there's also something exciting about seeing my journals and sketchbooks in retail stores. Just in time for the holidays, that is now possible in three shops in and around Nashville.

I'm excited to describe each, beginning with a partnership with the city's newest independent bookstore, Parnassus, which opened Nov. 19 after a wave of local and national publicity. The shop on opening night is pictured above and you can see more photos and read further at my blog.

I've also been hard at work to bring new designs to the Bryant Gallery in East Nashville, a great space just five blocks from home. The gallery's holiday show comes with expanded store hours, Wednesday through Saturday noon to 6 and Sunday noon to 5, through Dec. 24.

In nearby Leiper's Fork, a true art and antiques destination, the Laurel Leaf carries my leather journals and photo albums and I look forward to the possibility of teaching classes there in 2012.

These retailers are big promoters of the shop local movement of which I'm proud to be a part.

This weekend: 15% online discount

For the first time, I'm offering an online shopping discount valid starting Black Friday (Nov. 25) and ending Cyber Monday (Nov. 28). If you buy online this coming weekend, use the promotional code BOOKWEEKEND during checkout at my Etsy shop to earn 15% off your purchase.

Three bookmaking workshops

Description: Create eye-catching miniature book Christmas ornaments in this introductory bookbinding class. We’ll make sculptural books with surprising folded structures and functional journals that can be given as gifts to friends and family. This class will give you the techniques, ideas and resources to continue making handbound books.

Early in 2012, I will also begin teaching students and community members at Watkins College of Art, Design, and Film. While the class at The Skillery is a one-day workshop, these will be in-depth, multi-week courses. It's also worth looking at the lengthy list of Watkins' community classes, from basic sound recording to metal sculpture to paper marbling. Here's the course catalog.

Decorative and functional journals
When: 1 to 5 p.m., Saturdays, Feb. 18 – March 10 (4 weeks)
Where: Watkins College, 2298 Rosa Parks Blvd., Nashville
Cost: $100, plus $20 materials fee.
Description: Learn to bind your own unique and functional books, perfect for journaling or sketching. Beginning with simple folded and sewn structures, the class will work toward more complex bindings with exposed stitching that is both decorative and functional. The class will explore traditional techniques with an emphasis on using quality papers with interesting patterns and textures. All materials and tools will be provided.

Keepsakes transformed into sculptural books
When: 6 to 9 p.m., Thursdays, March 15 – 29 (3 weeks)
Where: Watkins College, 2298 Rosa Parks Blvd., Nashville
Cost: $100, plus $20 materials fee.

These books may look simple when closed, but they open to reveal surprising folded structures and intricate plays of light and shadow. Binding styles include double concertina, lotus fold and flag book. All materials and tools will be provided, but students are encouraged to bring personal paper items.
