*NEW* | Environmental Speaker Series

TALK #1: MICROPLASTICS - What We Know & What We Don't. The Museum at Campbell River and Greenways have partnered up. Together with Garth Covernton, PhD Candidate at the University of Victoria, we will be 'virtually' exploring the bigger picture of infamous small plastics: MICROPLASTICS. They are less than five millimeters (0.2 inches) in diameter.

Garth will share:
- what we know about how microplastics get into the environment,
- where they go from there,
- the effects that they might be having on wildlife,
- and what we can do to prevent these impacts.

THEY ARE EVERYWHERE
Microplastics are tiny synthetic particles that have been found to contaminate every corner of the planet - from Arctic snow to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, from lakes and rivers to the air we breathe. They’re a complex suite of contaminants and can come in many shapes, sizes, colors, and chemical compositions, as well act as sponges for other pollutants in the environment.

THEIR IMPACT
The specific effects of current environmental concentrations of microplastics on animals in the wild is still uncertain, yet scientists have shown negative impacts on animals which ingest high concentrations. The scientific community is currently working to explore the sources, extent, dynamics, and impacts of microplastics on marine animals and ecosystems.

Greenways in Mourning

A message from Sandra Milligan, Greenways' President:

It is with great sadness that I share news of the sudden passing of Greenways Land Trust Founding Director Ron Burrell on Saturday, Oct. 24th. My deepest sympathies to Ron’s family, and a huge thank you to them for their support of Ron’s work. Ron was a Greenways Director from its creation in 1996, through 2013, and served as President from 2001-2005, 2008 and 2009. He was deeply involved in protection of Beaver Lodge Lands and was continually active in the Beaver Lodge Trust Committee since its creation in 1993.

Just last Tuesday at our Beaver Lodge meeting, he was advocating strongly to protect stream habitat from an ill-placed ATV trail and agreed to be champion of a project to have bathrooms installed in Beaver Lodge. When I moved to town in 2003, his name was always in the paper, I thought: “Wow – that guy is getting stuff done with that Greenways organization.” He has been a mentor ever since, though he probably didn’t know it. He inspired me, but he also kicked my ass and said – “we need to do something about that” – and so we tried, and we try, and now we will keep on trying, because he wouldn’t have stopped trying. For me, he’ll never be gone. I’ll still hear his voice pushing me forward to protect nature that can’t protect itself.

~Sandra

Project Update
Adopt-A-Trail

Greenways Adopt-A-Trail volunteers continue to care for the trails in the Beaver Lodge Lands, working to fix drainage issues, cut back brush, collect garbage, and repair bridges. Their many hours of work are greatly appreciated!

Over the past year, we've also hosted public trail work parties, led by Tom Porsborg, who volunteers his time and expertise to help us improve our trail maintenance skills. These sessions are always a lot of fun and very informative. We will be hosting more of these sessions with small groups over the coming months - stay tuned for coming details!

If you're interested in getting out and helping care for a trail in the Beaver Lodge Forest Lands, please email volunteer@greenwaystrust.ca or leave us a message at 250-287-3785

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSOR

We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia to support our Adopt-a-Trail program!
