KSD Back in Business!

I would like to personally thank all residents in our local area for their patience and support while the Kingsford Smith Drive Project was being completed. It was also wonderful to have Jillian Kingsford-Smith, the great-niece of Charles Kingsford Smith, come and be present at the opening with myself and the Lord Mayor.

This project was one of the largest and most complex road projects undertaken by Brisbane City Council in living memory and to see it in its glory and delivered under budget, with $15 million in savings being put straight back into the pockets of Brisbane ratepayers, is a very exciting accomplishment for Council and our community.

- Increased traffic carrying capacity
- 5,000 jobs supported
- New Lores Bonney Riverwalk
- 7km of new & improved paths
- 8 intersections upgraded to improve safety
- Upgraded public parks & spaces
- 134,000 plants & trees put in
- Indented bus stop bays to improve traffic flow

Here is what's under the road!
Community Facility Tender

Council is now seeking tender applications for the lease of two community facilities - the Old Fire Station (77 Kitchener Rd, Ascot) and former Child Care facility behind (83 Kitchener Rd). The lease terms are up to four years.

The facilities will be open for inspection on Thursday, 12 November from 10am – 2pm. To attend this site inspection, email communityfacilities@brisbane.qld.gov.au or call Council on 3403  8888 and ask for the Community Facilities team.

Applications close midnight on Monday 30 November 2020, and must be submitted using the link below. You can also find further information in this link.

First Homeowners Grant

Council is easing the cost of living for first homeowners, with a new incentive that will give eligible residents a full rates rebate during their first year of homeownership.

By helping lower the cost of living through a range of rates rebates for those who need it most, this is just one of the ways Council is making Brisbane better.

Brisbane City Council is making it easier to buy your first home by providing a 50% rates rebate for eligible first homeowners of up to $1000.

Storm Safety

Every year, Brisbane experiences severe weather and it's important to take the time to prepare your family, pets and property. The tips on Council's website offer advice on what you should have in an emergency kit and how to stay safe before, during and after a severe weather event.

The Beirne Park Turf Renovation

Brisbane City Council wishes to advise of upcoming turf renovation works in The Beirne Park. This project is being delivered as part of Council’s commitment to keeping our city clean and green.

The project will commence on 9 November 2020 and is scheduled to be completed by 23 December 2020 (weather permitting).

The open space area, as marked on the map above, will be closed for the duration of the project. Other facilities including children’s playground, picnic facilities, toilet and fitness equipment will remain accessible.

For further information, please contact Council’s North Regional Office at ASNorthCustomerServices@brisbane.qld.gov.au or call Council on 3403 8888.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Great to see local members of our community raising awareness of Breast Cancer in October with lots of creativity. These pictures were taken in the Hamilton area, with a particular amount of effort in Oxford Street.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting Australian women. In 2020 it is predicted that 19,998 women and 170 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer. This means that approximately 20,168 Australians will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020, an average of 55 people every day. Brisbane River KittyCats

Soon enough you will be able to see these beauties purring along on our beautiful river! Five KittyCats are right now undergoing transformations before they hit the river as Brisbane’s newest mode of river transport next month.

The new vessels are bigger and faster than the old timber ferry fleet and will soon provide an even better experience for river commuters of all ages and abilities.

Dogs Off-Leash in Parks

I've seen increasing numbers of pet dogs off-leash in Council parks. Either take your pooch to one of Council's dog off-leash areas or otherwise, please be aware that dogs need to be on a leash in Council parks. Your pooches also need to be registered and owners are required to carry and use "dog-poo bags". Council officers will be increasing their surveillance in parks so I urge dog owners to be aware of these requirements and avoid a fine. If you need dog poo bags you are welcome to grab one of the bone bag dispensers for your fur-friend from my ward office.

Economic Recovery Taskforce Initiatives

Brisbane City Council is taking action to help rebuild Brisbane’s economy by delivering initiatives under our Economic Recovery Taskforce. To stimulate the economy through new building and construction, Council introduced a range of planning and building economic recovery initiatives on 1 July 2020.

The positive response has been fantastic and Council’s commitment to support the building and construction industry will continue over the coming months.

Garage Sale Trail 2020

Garage Sale Trail 2020, the Covid-19 recovery edition is GO. It’s been a challenging year so their number one focus is all about helping people make or save some spare money.

To ensure everyone, no matter where they are in Australia, can make some money from their pre-loved items they are offering ways to get involved online too.

For those locally or around Australia wanting to participate, you can find out how here.

Anti-Theft Screws

In order to help as many members of the community as possible to properly secure their vehicles’ registration plates, the North Brisbane District Crime Prevention Unit have developed packs containing anti-theft screws.

Anti-theft screws are a special type of ‘one way’ screw which when used to attach your registration plate to your vehicle, can only be removed with a specially designed tool.

This special removal tool is not sold to members of the public and can only be used by police officers.

With this simple step, you can save yourself the cost and trouble of having to replace stolen number plates.

If you are a North Brisbane resident, not only can you pick up free anti-theft screws from your local police station, but you can also order them online using a simple form. You can find out more information here https://bit.ly/3mrKMCz
