Dear Readers!

It's been a while since our last update. We've been quietly focused on launching a new project, and we are thrilled to finally share it with you. Remember our quarantine cooking series on Instagram? Well, today we're launching a new publication called Oral Traditions that collects all these recipes into one special place—a community cookbook!

Oral Traditions

Oral Traditions began as a social recipe sharing project, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It has since evolved into a community cookbook that explores the Asian diaspora past, present, and future through food. Wanna get involved? Submit a Recipe, or join our Recipe Testing Club! You don't have to be a professional chef to participate—home cooks, artists, writers, and anyone and everyone in our community are invited to contribute! Visit the website and share your feedback by responding to this email—we want to hear from you!

Happy Family Radio

In August, we launched a radio show highlighting music of the Asian diaspora. The mixes are thoughtful, eclectic, and curated by the musicians and DJs in our community, and feature original artwork created by the visual artists in our community. We release a new mix on the first Monday of every month. This Monday, we're releasing a new mix of Hindustani classical and gospel music curated by Jasper Lotti!

Celebrating Black Voices

We’ve been thinking long and hard about how best to support the Black community as an AAPI-focused project. Rather than repost pithy quotes from Black celebrities or historical figures, we wanted to celebrate Black voices within the Happy Family community, and put real names and faces to the abstract ideas of "solidarity" or “support.” In July, we launched an interview series on Instagram to show how our Black friends, family, and colleagues are actual (and not theoretical) stakeholders in the health and future of our shared, multicultural community.

Real Talk

Angeline here, Happy Family's Co-Founder and Director.

I know times are tough right now, and money is tight. But we need your support to continue to grow and thrive, and to transform Happy Family into a more sustainable and equitable project for all involved. Most people don't realize we are a 100% volunteer-run organization.

That means everything we have ever made over the past two years—our epic annual festivals, our monthly radio show, our cookbook, our website—was made as a labor of love by people like you, who believe enough in Happy Family's mission to donate their time and talent. Myself included!

My long-term vision is to grow Happy Family into a more diverse, equitable, inclusive—and sustainable—organization, for generations to come. This fall, I began the process of learning how to transition Happy Family from a fiscally sponsored LLC into a cooperatively owned enterprise (a coop), collectively owned and managed by the community.

I'll share more about this journey in the coming weeks—including how to participate—but in the meantime, we need financial support to keep the wind in our sails. If you can afford to give, please make a donation today. No amount is too small, and every dollar donated is one more step toward building an equitable, sustainable, and resilient community—of which I am so thankful you are a part.

With Gratitude,
Angeline
