What are you doing for Halloween?

The ghoulish holiday has become as confusing as everything else these days. Some neighborhoods are bonding more with parades and local gatherings. Downtown’s big celebration is off. The Boardwalk has trick-or-treating. Our favorite house, run by Chris Zephro, who owns one of the biggest mask-making operations in the world, Trick or Treat Studios, will have its graveyard and the real car from the movie Christine. They are up toward the top of Vienna Drive in Aptos. You can’t miss it. His website is here.

More Halloween and Dia de los Muertos Activities

Our wonderful Museum of Art and History has some great activities the first week of November.

November 1, 12-3:30pm

Pop-Up Installation: Community Altars & Ribbons at Evergreen Cemetery Stroll through Evergreen Cemetery in a self-guided walking tour of community ofrendas (altars) and view of a community-sourced ribbon installation Recordando Recuerdos. MAH staff members will be on-site to maintain a safe viewing experience. Masks and social distancing are required.

November 2-7

Pop-Up Installation: Community Ofrenda at the MAH

Take a moment to pause with a community altar (ofrenda). The ofrenda welcomes your stories of loved ones who have passed. Altars are built to honor the dead, welcome them to the living world, and celebrate with the offerings placed on the altar. Stop by the MAH to view the ofrenda and hold space for reflection.

November 5

Video Performance: Ensamble Musical de Senderos musical performance

Bring the beautiful music of Día de Muertos to your home thanks to Ensamble Musical de Senderos in a pre-recorded musical performance filmed at Evergreen Cemetery. The video will be posted here on November 5th for you to enjoy and share.

SANTA CRUZ MAH
We Have a Winner

Zoe Bibi-Landros, 7, won our coloring contest last month. We surprised her by bringing her prize to her house, a colorful Narwal.

We won too with this note from her mom, Andrea:

“Thank you so much for delighting Zoe with the surprise visit & the narwhal! She is very reserved with most people, but she was jumping for joy on the inside :-)

“She’s been having such a hard time lately being estranged from friends & peers and out of school, you brought her some joy and made her feel confident.”

Pick up our latest issue and send in your best coloring and we’ll give surprise prizes to the winners.

Honor Your Favorite Teacher

And yet another contest. We will give prizes to teachers you nominate as your favorite teachers. Write an essay about who they are and why you love them. We will pick one every month and give them some valuable gifts!
