Crisis in Lebanon Event Report Now Available

The World Refugee & Migration Council has published its event report for the virtual panel discussion hosted on September 9 addressing the impact of multiple crises facing Lebanon for refugees, migrants, and forcibly displaced people in the country.

In the report you will find a recap of the discussion participants held around the WRMC’s priority areas of responsibility sharing and governance, while touching on matters of corruption, nepotism, and how international donors can work with local actors to ensure aid is delivered to those it is intended.

The report also includes recommendations and policy prescriptions from the panelists. Recommendations ranged from systemic overhaul of the Lebanese judiciary, the creation of an international emergency fund, to envisioning new mechanisms for resettlement, and reforming the current kafala (or sponsorship) system that holds migrant domestic workers in effective slavery.

“Now is the time to strengthen the way international organisations work on the ground to improve transparency, accountability, and reform the ways plans are developed.” — Maha Shuayb
The panel discussion was moderated by Susan Harada, Associate Professor at Carleton University and former CBC reporter. Our panelists were: Lloyd Axworthy, Chair, World Refugee & Migration Council; Elizabeth Ferris, Vice President of Research, World Refugee & Migration Council; Lama Mourad, Assistant Professor, Carleton University; Maha Shuayb, Director, Centre for Lebanese Studies; Maha Yahya, Director, Carnegie Middle East Center; and Marwan Muasher, Vice President for Studies at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and World Refugee & Migration Council member.

Read the report here. You can also watch a recording of the virtual panel discussion in its entirety.
