I am pleased to present to you, as a member of our CAMP community, the new Colorado Attorney Mentoring Program Strategic Plan. This is a plan by and for our community and is the result of many months of information gathering, analysis, and careful thought by our staff, stakeholders, and participants. 

Our intent in publishing this plan is to provide clear direction for how CAMP will continue to advance strategically and with unity of purpose from our current position of strength to even greater relevance. We will do this by focusing our efforts and investments on the areas where we can most clearly differentiate ourselves and where we can have the greatest impact.

The plan takes into account that we are constantly reinventing the CAMP program. This is consistent with our pioneering spirit and reputation for innovation. Rather than rest on our record of accomplishment, we are committed to taking even greater responsibility for achieving more together in the future.

Appropriately, our strategic plan focuses on how we, as community members, can connect our endeavors to CAMP's overarching mission—to promote professional pride and identity in Colorado’s legal community and excellence in service to the public. Just as CAMP creates an environment where our participants define themselves, the plan sets the stage for all of us to work collectively to define CAMP's future.

Rather than a tactical guide, the plan is strategic, laying out in clear terms where we plan to invest our resources and why. We look to you, the members of our community, to turn the plan into action by thinking creatively about how you can align your time, talent, and effort with the strategy laid out here.

In very real terms, this plan challenges all of us to gather our strengths and work collaboratively to enhance CAMP's position as one of the nation's great attorney mentoring programs.

We have the will to do this, and with this plan, we have the way.

This strategic plan, in its making and in its message, exemplifies the enormous power of collaboration for which CAMP is renowned.

Collaboration is precisely how this plan came into being. By engaging many individuals—participants, staff, stakeholders, and alumni—across all areas of interest and responsibility, we have discovered practical approaches for taking CAMP to ever greater heights. 

Collaboration is also how we will turn this plan into action. The strategy the plan embodies will guide us. As such, it is the basis for more tactical planning, a stimulus for participants and stakeholders to think creatively about how their goals align with the plan.

Just as the world around us changes constantly, the legal profession is continuously evolving. New lawyers arrive. Interests and emphases change. This plan allows for such dynamism without sacrificing our focus on the ultimate outcome—a great lawyer mentoring program fulfilling its mission to promote community, professionalism, and competency for Colorado lawyers.

CAMP Upcoming Events

Legal and other disputes are increasingly resolved by dispute resolution processes other than litigation. Given this trend, it is important for new lawyers to be familiar with these alternative processes, such as arbitration and mediation, and the benefits and risks they present. At the same time, these alternative processes require creative and interdisciplinary problem-solving perspectives and skills. Join our panel of experts to explore negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and court-connected dispute resolution procedures. Gain a conceptual and legal framework of basic dispute resolution processes and skills. We?ll also cover ADR career pathways and how to thrive as an ADR practitioner.

Professionalism is about Relationships
         
           What is professionalism?  Webster defines it as “the skill, good judgment, and polite behavior that is expected from a person who is trained to do a job well.”  However, professionalism is, at its core, about relationships.  In fact, one of the biggest predictors of malpractice claims is not about making mistakes, but rather a lack of interpersonal relationship skills.  How are your relationships with your co-workers, opposing counsel, and clients?  How are your communication skills?  Are you keeping clients updated about their case?  Are you approaching conflicts or setbacks maturely?  Are you networking and keeping your collegial relationships going?  As Maya Angelou said, “…people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”  Spend some time thinking about how you make the people around you feel.  Could you be a bit more patient, kind, understanding, or calm?
