Charles Stanley Cuthbert: Diary of a WWI Soldier

As we approach Armistice Day on 11 November, we are pleased to present a digitised manuscript diary donated to dlr LexIcon in 2015. In 2018 we hosted an exhibition on the life of Charles Stanley Cuthbert curated by dlr Libraries' archivist in residence David Gunning. Thanks to the support and generosity of Peter and Philip Cuthbert who donated their father’s manuscript diary of his experiences of WWI, amongst other artefacts and memorabilia, we are now delighted to present this digitised diary and a new version of the exhibition online.

After the war, Charles made his home in Ireland. He stayed at a variety of addresses in Dún Laoghaire and Blackrock in the 1930s and 40s and lived in Shankill from 1970 until his death at the age of 93 in 1988.

The second celebrates the new mural created by pupils from Dominican Primary School in the grounds of the Oratory. The overall project has been shortlisted for a Chambers Ireland Local Government Award and was funded by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.

Launch of dlr Scéal Trail

We were delighted to launch dlr Scéal Trail last week with author Sadhbh Devlin, dlr Writer in Residence 2019/2020 and her family. The Scéal Trail was launched by An Cathaoirleach, Councillor Una Power as part of Children’s Book Festival 2020.

dlr Scéal Trail is an outside story walk that everyone can enjoy! A scéal trail or story walk is a book delivered in an exhibition format that you can follow, from beginning to end, as you walk with your family or friends.

Our very first Scéal Trail is Sadhbh's beautiful story Geansaí Ottó, illustrated by Róisín Hahessy and published by Futa Fata.

You'll find this Scéal Trail outside dlr LexIcon, Dún Laoghaire, on the walkway between Haigh Terrace and the Metals, on the Maritime Museum side of the building. Keep an eye out for some lovely woolly creations and yarn-bombing outside the LexIcon and look out for some window displays in your local Dún Laoghaire book shops where you can buy your very own forever copy of Geansaí Ottó. Take a photo of you or your children enjoying dlr Scéal Trail and email them to libraryculture@dlrcoco.ie
We have 20 copies of Geansaí Ottó for the best photos received!
