Surabaya: Host of the World Habitat Day 2020
5-6 October 2020 | Surabaya, Indonesia – The world's attention and eyes are focused on Surabaya, as the city led by Mayor Tri Rismaharini, President of UCLG ASPAC and Vice President of UCLG World, got the honour to host the “Global Observance of the World Habitat Day 2020 – Housing For All: A Better Urban Future.” The international event was held online and offline and opened at the Surabaya City Hall, Monday (5/10/2020) night. The event applied strict health protocol. Not only that the committee arranged tables and chairs about 2.5 meters apart, but also delegates, cultural performers, and all people attending the event offline were required to pass a swab test with negative result. The Second BLC: Translating Knowledge into Action
5-6 October 2020 | Gwangju – UCLG ASPAC, in collaboration with the Raoul Wallenberg Institute (RWI) and the City of Gwangju, showcased insights from selected city representatives to localise the SDGs using the human rights-based approach on the second batch of Blended Learning Course (BLC) with the theme “The Blended Learning Course for Local Governments: Localising Human Rights in the SDGs Process” from 5 to 6 October 2020. Conducted in conjunction with the 10th World Human Rights Cities Forum (WHRCF) held in Gwangju, 7-10 October 2020, the second BLC captured the commitment and progress made by selected city representatives in translating knowledge into their respective fields of work. Daejeon Aspiring to be Model of Leading Eco-Friendly City as Response to Climate Change
THE city of Daejeon has decided to take the city’s climate commitment further. Putting priorities on air quality improvement, urban water cycle management, and ecological environment restoration, the city has aspired to be model of leading eco-friendly city and to be recognised by global society from its practices. The city has shown its commitment through development of policies and relevant supporting programmes. City of Daejeon established ‘Fine Dust Respond Strategy 2.0’ in 2019 after complementing programmes that include 11 strategies and 29 practical tasks to reduce 480 tons of ultrafine dust emission (20% of reduction compared to the emission rate in 2015) and achieve an annual ultrafine dust concentration of 17㎍/㎥ by 2022. Go Self-Driving Bus, Go-Gunsan
GUNSAN has drawn attention as the first local government establishing a new transportation infrastructure for sustainable tourism: a self-driving bus. The city’s eco-friendly transportation service drives new waves of sustainable tourism in local community. According to the city government, four autonomous vehicles started the test driving on Gogunsan Seonyu Island, where tourists’ loving spot full of greenness. The city set up the new project called “One Go Gunsan Tourism Belt Creation Project”. It has been selected as one of the pilot-projects of the Regional Development and Investment Agreement by the Presidential Committee for Balanced National Development. Click

Contribution of Geoparks in Achieving SDGs: Lessons Learned from Sawahlunto and Republic of Korea
COVID-19 has heavily impacted various sectors, including tourism. LOCALISE SDGs, a collaborative programme of UCLG ASPAC and association of the Indonesia Municipalities (APEKSI) funded by the European Union (EU), has recorded ways explored by local governments across Indonesia to revive tourism in their respective areas and re-stimulate local economic development. Responding to that, LOCALISE SDGs Programme has regularly held and participated in virtual discussions aiming to increase the capacity of local governments to revive sectors affected by COVID-19, including tourism, making use of the system-thinking framework of the SDGs. These discussions are also particularly beneficial for the sharing and exchange of good practices, as well as lessons learned between local governments on pandemic response, recovery and prevention. Palembang Sets Forth to Define Its Mitigation Target in Developing City's Climate Action Plan
14 September 2020 | Palembang – UCLG ASPAC, serving as the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM) Southeast Asia Secretariat, has been supporting GCoM cities to meet their climate ambition and achieve a resilient and low-carbon future. Through the International Urban Cooperation (IUC) Asia programme, UCLG ASPAC has assisted cities in developing their evidence-based Climate Action Plans (CAPs), and one of them is Palembang, one of vibrant cities in Indonesia. To design well-targeted climate mitigation plans, Palembang has completed its greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory from the period of 2016 to 2019. Now, Palembang is moving forward to the next step, which is establishing the city’s carbon emissions reduction target. UCLG ASPAC IUC Asia programme has supported Palembang to realise the city’s commitment to managing its carbon footprint. Click |
