JULIE LONG OAM - PRESIDENT OF THE CBCA ACT BRANCH

President’s Report November 2020

Hello everyone,

Book Week 2020 has been a huge success with the build up to the virtual announcement and then the big online reveal. The National Board should be justifiably proud of the adjustments that were made to cope with the implications of COVID. It was also a thrill to see that a local ACT author, Lisa Fuller, won an Honour Book award for her Older Reader novel “Ghost Bird”. She was congratulated on behalf of the Branch and presented with some 2020 Children’s Book Week merchandise to mark the occasion.

Our Children’s Book Week dinner at the Carlton Room at Olims enabled attendees to browse the Shortlisted, Winning and Honour books, as well as enjoy a delicious meal. At the dinner we were pleased to see and hear an explanation from Gina Newton about her two newest titles - "Hold On! Saving the Spotted Handfish" and "Combat Wombat to the Rescue". Both books were launched by Tim the Yowie Man the following week during Children's Book Week at The Artist's Shed in Fyshwick. Maura Dand won the raffle of a box of picture books and novels. Thank you to Rosemary Thomas for bringing the display of books and to Maura Pierlot who planned and organised the venue.

Another exciting event that occurred on the Awards Announcement day was the official opening of the Macgregor Primary School Street Library, which was donated by the Little Street Library organisation. The students who won the design competition were on hand to explain the significance of their paintings and the school leaders talked about the importance of the Street Library to the school community. Norma John managed the ceremony beautifully and I was thrilled to be asked to cut the ribbon to officially open the Library.

The 20 teams that took part in our ACT inaugural Reader’s Cup competition enjoyed the experience and all had read the 5 chosen novels carefully. The winning school was Hughes Primary and they have been presented with the engraved Cup and individual medallions. Mother Theresa School came second and a Radford team came third. Huge thanks to Rachael Hind who organised this event.

The Christmas Book Appeal was scaled down this year and we were able to make use of books that we had in storage to fill requests from The Canberra Hospital, Doris Women’s shelter, Beryl Women’s, Louisa Domestic Violence service (Queanbeyan). The stock was boosted by a huge donation of 352 children’s books from Tania McCartney and 373 from Rosemary Thomas via the Book of the Year Awards entries this year.

Please take time to view our website as it has been upgraded by new Committee member Catherine Morgans and Kirrin Sampson. There are Institutional and Individual membership forms there for 2021. The Committee is in the process of compiling the Branch calendar for 2021 and it will be uploaded when complete.

Happy reading everyone,

Julie Long
CBCA ACT Branch President

The day she stole the sun

When bushfires ripped through Cobargo in the early hours of the morning on New Year’s Eve, some lost houses, others lost family members and all have a story to tell about that day.

Together, along with the help of their teacher Campbell Kerr, Cobargo Public’s Year Five and Six class have told their story – writing and illustrating a book titled ‘The Day She Stole the Sun.’

The book is $22, of which $10 goes to the School.  To purchase, go to the Little Scribe website.

    • This strange year has created lovely moments...the broadcast on YouTube was one today. Thank you to all involved, and congratulations to all the winners, honour books and nominated books.
    • Dull, uninteresting selection. Nothing to inspire a child to want to even pick it up. Muddy colours, uninspiring drawings. As usual they will probably be the least borrowed books in the school library. Good luck school librarians trying to encourage children to borrow them.
    • Congratulations to all the winners of CBCA 2020 Short Listed categories and to the recipients' of the CBCA Honour Awards. Special mention to all the shortlisted books. I enjoyed reading them and being taking on a journey by exceptional Australian authors and illustrators. Congratulations to all at CBCA and the judges for an excellent job with the 2020 awards processes. The video announcing the award was very well done and much appreciated, especially during these COVID restrictions.
