Lifting Up #SmallWaterwayBiz

ROW's Economics Element Committee met this month to continue its work on a wide variety of efforts to support development and redevelopment along our waterways. But, with many local businesses struggling during this time of pandemic and shutdowns, the committee came up with an idea to give a little extra boost to small waterway businesses this season and especially on November 28, Small Business Saturday.

On this day, ROW will place 100 Shop Small Biz-branded canvas bags filled with some ROW swag, some waterway focused information, a list of local businesses, and even a few local business gift cards in random bags.

Thanks to Near Eastside non-profit print shop, CatHead Press for helping turn around the bags so quickly to make this possible. Thanks to our waterway volunteers for helping identify small local businesses, distributing bags and more. As ROW promotes this event leading up to and on November 28, we hope our collective members will share social media posts and information broadly to support some of the small businesses in our waterway communities.

NOTE: The businesses and distribution of bags in each waterway is as unique as the neighborhoods themselves. So, be sure and read the small print!

Funding for this #SmallWaterwayBiz event is part of ROW's Event Grant program through the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust

Steering Committee Spotlight:
Rhonda Harper Elected Co-Chair

ROW is pleased to announce that Rhonda Harper, Community and Stakeholder Engagement Manager with Citizens Energy Group (Citizens), was elected as its new Steering Committee Co-Chair during its November 13 meeting.

Rhonda began her career with Citizens in 1985 and has held numerous positions of increasing responsibility over more than 30 years. The majority of her career at Citizens has been in Customer Relations, holding the positions of supervisor, manager and Director of Customer Relations prior to moving to Corporate Affairs in May of 2015, as the Community and Stakeholder Engagement Manager.

She is responsible for managing Citizens low-interest loan program, building and maintaining relationships with community groups, neighborhood associations and other stakeholders.  In addition, Rhonda represents Citizens in redevelopment and revitalization efforts in our community.

Rhonda studied business at Oakland City College and serves on several local boards including Child Advocates, South East Neighborhood Development and Citizens Investment Collaboration on Neighborhoods. She also serves as the First Vice President of the board of directors for the National Energy and Utility Affordability Coalition. In addition, Rhonda serves on various committees such as the Mapleton Fall Creek Economic Development Committee, the INRC Neighbor Power Program Committee, and the Indiana State Fair Community Engagement committee and others.

Rhonda's says of this new responsibility: "Citizens had been involved with ROW prior to my joining the steering committee in 2015. As the water and wastewater utility for Marion county and some of the surrounding counties, we have a responsibility to our customers to provide safe, reliable service at the lowest possible cost. ROW’s mission, and  commitment to the waterways is a natural fit with Citizens as the provider of water and wastewater services.  While our missions differ, our desire for safe, clean waterways align. Citizens values the work ROW does and values the thoughts, opinions and ideas provided regarding certain initiatives and projects. We have reached out to ROW prior to implementation of several projects and initiatives and have also ensured ROW was kept up to date on projects such as Dig Indy. Citizens' decisions and initiatives must be aligned with what is best for our customers, keeping regulatory requirements and expectations,  customer feedback,  and cost in mind. This may not always be in alignment with ROW, however we respect and value the collective."

ROW also wants to thank our outgoing Co-Chair, IUPUI's Gabriel (Gabe) Filippelli who served a two-year volunteer leadership term. Rhonda joins CICF's Alphons Van Adrechem as he completes the second of his two-year term.

Little Eagle Creek Takes a Walk

On Saturday, November 20, Little Eagle Creek Waterway Co-Chairs, Joan Servaas and Jeb Bardon, took six community members on a nearly 3-mile loop walk and talk to share some of the beauty of the area.

#GetOutside
All Fall and Winter

Throughout the winter, there are many opportunities to #OptOutside and enjoy the parks, greenways and waterways. While you'll need to bundle up a little, staying active and healthy in these outdoor spaces might just be the perfect solution to the winter blues, especially at a time of a global pandemic.

Here's a few ways to #OptOutside:

• ROW's Exploration Guide offers many ways to see interesting sites, learn about history and ecology on your outings.
• ROW's Pogue's Run Waterway committee just published an even more in-depth Run, Bike & Walk Map.
• Keep Indianapolis Beautiful and the Artis Council of Indianapolis offer over 100 art installations in Indy Art & Seek
• And, many more Indy Parks Trails & Greenways maps are also available on-line.

ROW will print the Exploration Guide for distribution in 2021. More news about it will be shared soon.

Helping Our Vulnerable Neighbors
As Indianapolis' most vulnerable populations struggle with joblessness and other challenges, there has been an increase of hunger and need for assistance. There are many organizations across our city working to meet the demands during these difficult times. Consider a donation of food, funds or time this holiday season at a local food bank or pantry in your neighorborhood.

A list of food pantries was published in the Indy Star  and the Indiana Dept of Family and Social Services also has a searchable map to locate food panties and other resources.

What My Waterway Means To Me - Reflections Campaign Expanded

All across ROW's waterway committees and waterway neighborhoods, people have unique and personal connections to the rivers and streams. They share a few thoughts in these short videos shared initially during this year's ROWPort, and now becoming our expanded photo essay project, Reflections.
