Hats Off (or on) to Our Volunteers

Our new LIMITED EDITION volunteer hats have arrived in time for Summer, 'modelled' here by team leader Peter Sadler. Some of you collected them at your picnic, (see Herb and Co. below) but if you missed out and would like one of the very fetching Easy Care Gardening Bucket Hats let your coordinator know directly or Click here .  We have them in medium (67) and large (60). 🧑‍🌾👨🏻‍🌾

Eye protection is an important part of your personal protection when gardening.  Mowing, whipper snippering, weeding near spiky plants and injuries from branches when pruning are all common injuries, so wear some safety googles or glasses (or safety sunglasses for added sunlight protection) and stay safe. 😎😎😎
If you haven't reached out for some support and you're a carer, perhaps joining an online Zoom session could be a good way to connect with other Carers.

Thanks to everyone who attended the picnics, and special thanks to Coralie and the Coordinators for their efforts in putting them together.
Client Close Up

When Merv and Thelma first moved into their home in West Ryde over 60 years ago it looked nothing like it does now.  There was a broken down outside privy and the back garden was overrun with blackberries, for starters. Then there was the piles of rubbish they had to remove from the makeshift tip that was in the back, the cleaning and the painting.

Today their home is unrecognisable from the picture they paint telling of those early days... >Read their story

Some of Merv and Thelma's Feathered Friends!

Did you know that according to author and bird expert Darryl Jones, half the citizens of Australia, the UK, and the US feed birds, whether its by planting trees that attract them, putting food out on apartment balconies, setting up birds baths and feeders, or by unwittingly leaving scraps behind in parks.  In The Birds at My Table, Ecologist Darryl Jones draws on an impressive knowledge of the latest scientific findings as well as his own personal knowledge, to reflect and explain the modern practice of bird feeding.

If you're someone who feeds birds, put this book on your Christmas Present list!

Have you got some backyard buddies?

This great shot was snapped by our coordinator Shuna near Lane Cove National Park walking home from school with the kids.  Then just to top it, Larissa has a video of her visiting echidna at North Turramurra which you can see on our Facebook page here.

Did you know Echidnas are the oldest mammals alive today?  They are terrific 'gardeners' digging, eating ants and termite and Christmas beetle larvae.  Echidnas are normally unafraid of humas, with their built in defence system, but your cats and dogs are their biggest enemies - so keep them locked up especially now during their breeding season.

For more information, check out the Backyard Buddies website here

We'd love to get to know you better. Why not post a picture on our Facebook page of one of your creations - painting, planting, paving - we're not fussy, just friendly!
International Day of People with Disability - 3rd December, 2020

IDPwD is a United Nations observed day celebrated internationally. It aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and celebrate their achievements and contributions.

You might enjoy reading this story from their website about raising the bar of meaningful employment one bouquet at a time.

GG’s Flowers has come from very humble beginnings, starting in the family bathroom in 2013, graduating to the small garden shed, and is now looking to move to new commercial premises, which Nip says will be “awesome for our business”. GG’s Flowers employs people with Down syndrome, Prader Willi syndrome, Autism, Asperger’s syndrome among other disabilities.  To read more, click here.
