Dear Parents, Caregivers & Friends of the College

The teaching staff of the college have been really pleased with the way our Year 9 and 10 boys have settled back into the routine of teaching and learning after the junior examinations which ended last Thursday.

As outlined in my update to you on Monday, the programme of teaching and learning continues in the classroom over these next two weeks before the final week of the year.   From Monday 7th through to Thursday 10th December, Year 10 boys will be out in a wide range of outdoor education activities and camps across the North Island.
My thanks to our teachers who provide an exciting and varied range of opportunities for your sons.  Your support in ensuring the costs incurred to provide these opportunities are covered is appreciated.

During the final week, Year 9 students are involved in an alternative programme with a range of learning opportunities available to them.  The expectations for both year levels is that your son continues to attend school.

Friday 11th December is the final day of the school year with our Junior prizegiving taking place at 11.30am in the college gymnasium.  A warm invitation is extended to you all to join us in recognising those who have achieved academically this year.  At the conclusion of the Junior prizegiving at approximately 12.15pm, the boys will be released for the holiday break and are welcome to join their classmates to share a sausage and a drink on the college green before departing for the year.

Thursday was an exciting day for Year 8 boys with an orientation day here at the college.  The boys were welcomed with a rousing Haka from our Year 9 boys who performed with significant pride.  The Year 8 boys were then placed in their classes for Year 9, then spent the morning familiarising themselves with the college campus and organisation in preparation for their return on their first day next year, Wednesday 3rd February 2021.

The remaining weeks of the college have a number of events of note:
  • Year 9 camps continue for 9TSU
  • Year 10 Inquiry have a camp on Great Barrier Island
  • Tuesday 1st December, Junior cross country on Nicholson Field:
               - Year 9 cross country at 11.00am
               - Year 10 cross country at 11.50am
               - Parents and spectators are welcome
  •  Thursday 3rd December, 9.30am - Good Man and White Ribbon Assembly
  •  Friday 4th December, 11.50am - Reading prizegiving in the Library
  •  Monday 7th - Thursday 10th December - Year 10 camps / Year 9 Alternative Programme
  •  Friday 11th December - Junior prizegiving, 11.30am in the TBC gymnasium

OLD BOYS' DONATION

Thank you to the many of you who have paid the Old Boys' donation this year.  A reminder to all leavers who have paid the donation, they are entitled to an Old Boys tie.  These can be collected from the office during normal hours.

As a result of the generosity of those donating to the Old Boys' Association, many of our students have benefitted from grants from the Association.  This support has been extensive this year with many of our current students benefitting and able to access opportunities through the Old Boys' Support Fund.  In addition, the Old Boys provide significant scholarships across a range of areas in the college whilst also covering the cost of the Year 13 leavers function.

2020 OLD BOYS' DINNER

A very successful Old Boys' Dinner was held in the Graham Young Youth Theatre last Friday with approx. 120 attendees.

We were very fortunate to have Old Boy Grahame Morton as our Guest Speaker for the evening and John Bracewell was presented with the 2020 Old Boy of the Year Award.

A number of items were auctioned off during the course of the evening, raising money which will go towards the Old Boys' Support Fund which current students can access.

Our thanks to the following generous sponsors:
  • David Littlewood, Director of Mobel Group
  • Tom Roper, Director of Zariba Holdings
  • Wayne Brill, Steamers Team Manager, who donated a pair of Sam Cane's rugby boots from the World Cup
  • Peter Burling, Team NZ Skipper, who donated a signed Emirates Team NZ Shirt
  • Sam Cane, All Blacks Captain, who donated a signed Chiefs Jersey
  • Kane Williamson, who donated a signed Test Shirt

Thank you to everyone who made this evening a success.

CONGRATULATIONS
OUTWARD BOUND SCHOLARSHIPS

Congratulations to Michael-Dean Palmer and Hayden Collier who were recently awarded Outward Bound Scholarships to attend the Tangaroa Watch programme at Anakiwa in the South Island.

Students are nominated by their schools and selected by Outward Bound staff members based on their commitment to their school and the community, with demonstrated financial need and an opportunity to improve their self-confidence.

Dedicated Acorn donors and other local supporters provide these valuable scholarships to this three-week programme that uses outdoor adventures and physical activities to build resilience, perseverance and communication skills which deliver life-long benefits.

SCIENCE
Raw Milk

Year 11 Agricultural students take an achievement standard on livestock management practices which cover dairy, lamb, deer, pig and poultry.  To support this learning, the Good Farm in Welcome Bay kindly agreed to host a visit.  The farm has a dairy herd which supplies raw milk all year round.  The farm manager, Loren Gibbs spoke to the students about animal nutrition and health.  He explained the changing feed requirements during the year and for different stages of animal development.  While Dairy exports are the biggest primary product exported from New Zealand, horticulture overshadows this in the local region.  There is considerable demand for Agricultural students across New Zealand.
Soil Cultivation

Level 1 Agricultural and Horticultural students recently learnt about soil cultivation first hand thanks to Kennards Hire who kindly donated the use of their tractor and rotary hoe.  A small area of the school's grounds was pre-soaked with water to its saturation point.  Ground Manager, Chris then rotary hoed across both saturated and dry soil.  Students were able to see more clearly the level of compaction and impact damage associated with the cultivation of wet soil compared to no damage in the dry soil.
