Celebrate Black Catholic History

Black Catholic History Month was first celebrated in November 1990, on the 350th Anniversary of the death of St. Martin de Porres. In addition to St. Martin, leading lights of African descent from early Christianity include SS. Augustine of Hippo, Cyril of Alexandria and the second century Pope, St. Victor I.  Today, there are 200 million Catholics of African descent world wide. Learn more here.

The USCCB's Committee for Religious Liberty has identified November 22, the Solemnity of Christ the King, as a day to promote the Church’s teaching on religious freedom. Read the USCCB's statement on Religious Liberty and find other resources here.

"The right to religious freedom has its foundation in the very dignity of the human person. Religious freedom is the human right that guarantees all other rights — peace and creative living together will only be possible if freedom of religion is fully respected."

-Archbishop Thomas Wenski, Chairman of the Committee for Religious Liberty
