Reign of Christ Sunday

Sunday November 22 is the last Sunday in our liturgical year and is known as Reign of Christ or Christ the King Sunday. What does Reign of Christ actually mean for us as Christians? In a world where the Church seems to be less and less significant in the lives of most Americans, Reign of Christ Sunday reminds us of our mortality and draws our eyes to the end of time when Christ will reign fully over the earth. Peace will abound and indeed the lion will lay down with the lamb.

After Reign of Christ Sunday we will prepare our hearts and minds for Jesus' birth during the season of Advent. It is a time to pause and reflect on how we will welcome the Christ child into our lives once again . But first, we remember who we give our allegiance to: Christ our one true source of light and life. The One who came to earth to show a different way of living and being, one which is focused outward into the world praying for all God's people. It is also a season of intentional devotion either personally or corporately it is a time for our souls to breathe. We can suspend the frantic search for the perfect gift, and especially this year, spend time in quiet contemplation about what we are grateful for and what we hope for this new year.
Bishop Lee has once again communicate with all our churches regarding mitigation guidelines for COVID. His announcement reads in part I am suspending in-person meetings and worship in our diocese’s congregations for at least 30 days in the city of Chicago, and for at least three weeks in congregations outside the city limits. This suspension of in-person activities will take effect on Monday, November 16. Live streaming or recording services in church buildings may continue, but may include a maximum of 10 people, and only those required to assist with essential tasks.
This is of course bad news as we are getting ready for Advent and Christmas, and while we are disappointed by this announcement, we understand the health and safety of all of us is our most important priority. Trish, Wayne, and myself are working hard to ensure meaningful worship for all. Thank you for your patience and  grace.

Prayers for Essential Workers
For their physical, emotional and spiritual health

Good and Gracious God,
Please protect and guide the many people who are tirelessly working to assist others during this pandemic: We are grateful for doctors, nurses and aides who are directly caring for those who are ill, as well as the support staff of cleaners, food preparers, transporters;
We are grateful to police, firefighters, EMTs, all who are in the first line of offering assistance; We are grateful for garbage collectors, retail associates, warehouse workers and drivers who are making it possible for others to shelter-in-place. Wrap them in your Light and Love. And so we pray. Amen.
– Pat McKenzie, Oblate, Community of St. John Baptist
