Tricks, Treats, and Trails

Thank you to everyone that came out for our first ever Tricks, Treats, and Trails Halloween fundraiser! There were a few obstacles to hosting a safe and fun event (a pandemic, bad weather...) but Preston County showed up and we had a great event! Special thanks go out to Mountaineer Contracting, Philadelphia Pretzel Factory, Russ's Ribs,  Preston Trail Towns, Affordable Signs, and Alpine Lake Resort. These local businesses and organizations were incredibly helpful in ensuring the success of this event. We also could not have done it without all of our volunteers! Whether they were assisting with the mini-games, creating decorations, or scaring you along the trail, our volunteers are the best!

We hope to see everyone next year for a bigger and better event!

Caring For Our Trails

Our WVNRT Trail Crew is the best! They took the time out of their Saturday morning to help clean up all this stuff that had been dumped along the WV Northern Rail-Trail and make it cleaner, safer, and more enjoyable for everyone. A BIG thank you to our volunteer community members for their hard work and involvement, particularly to Jay Sowers for his hard work and resources in hauling this stuff out, as well as his overall dedication to making Preston County litter free. If you or anyone you know needs help getting rid of trash, please message us and we can put you in contact with folks that can help. Let’s all work together to keep our public spaces and recreational assets beautiful.

We could also like to thank the youngest members of our trail crew for placing a temporary 1-mile marker at the Kingwood end of the WVNRT. Thanks to them, you can walk, bike, or run towards your fitness goals! Interested in joining our trail crew? Email prestoncountyparks@gmail.com.
Masontown Trailhead Park Girl Scout Silver Award

We are thrilled Alyssa Comstock, of Kingwood Girl Scout Troop 54545, fundraised and built this lovely picnic table for the Masontown Trailhead Park. The preparation and implementation of this project fulfills requirements towards earning her Silver Award. Her mother, Missy Comstock, is an Assistant Leader for the Kingwood area troop and is so proud of her daughter's motivation and initiative- we can't agree more! We are inspired by youth like Alyssa who are dedicated and invested in their communities.  Do you know of any youth looking for fun community service and leadership experience? Contact us at prestoncountyparks@gmail.com for more information on our youth engagement opportunities . Also, if you are interested in finding more information on joining Girl Scouts in Preston County (currently there are troops in Kingwood, Tunnelton, Terra Alta, Aurora, and Bruceton Mills areas), contact Shannon Davis at shannon.davis@bdgsc.org or 681-209-5194 and she will put you in contact with the right troop based on where you live in the county.
PCPaRC Awarded WVU Center for Active WV Grant
The WVU Center for ActiveWV graciously awarded PCPaRC a $5,000 grant to install a NatureRocks Small Boulder at our Kingwood Trailhead Park! The design and feel of the play equipment mimics an actual outcropping, which allows kids a way to experience rock-climbing and bouldering in a safe way. We plan on purchasing the structure this winter, and installing it in the spring. Check our facebook for updates on this fun new addition!
Meet the PCPaRC staff!
This year we brought on Rachelle, Lauren, and Mike. You might have seen them around, but here's your chance to get to know them all a little better!

Rachelle started with us in January as our new Executive Director and since then she's hit the ground running- launching community recreation initiatives throughout the county, such as Wellness in the Park and the PCPaRC Trail Crew. She has a gazillion more ideas and loves working towards enhancing the quality of life for Prestonians, as well as promoting Preston County as a recreationally rich destination for all. She brings with her a wealth of experience and knowledge in parks and recreation management, as well as public land preservation and environmental protection. She has extensively studied mine pools throughout Preston County and finds them, as well as the county's coal mining history, fascinating. When she's not plugging away at grant writing and planning for Preston County's recreational future, she loves to mountain bike, ride gravel roads and rail-trails, and adventure with her daughter and pups outside.

Originally from Wheeling, Lauren graduated from WVU in 2019 with degrees in History and International Studies. While serving as an AmeriCorps at Arthurdale Heritage, Lauren got to know Preston County and decided to stick around and join PCPaRC as our Development Coordinator! In normal times, Lauren enjoys traveling, cross-stitching, and finding geocaches around Preston. Recently she's been helping us out with fundraising and planning the 2021 Dirty Double Gravel Bike Race (more info on that coming soon!).

A resident of Kingwood, Mike was drawn to PCPaRC because of his love for the county's rail-trails. As our Recreation Engagement Coordinator, Mike works largely towards growing the capacity and sustainability of our Trail Crew and Wellness in the Park program. He has experience as a personal trainer at Camp Dawson Event Center, in addition to years of experience in management. Mike loves PCPaRC and will tell you his three sons empower him to work towards making Preston County the best county for his family and yours. In his free time he enjoys getting outside with his family as much as possible. His determination to give back to his community is inspiring and we are delighted to have him on board!
