BTWC 2020 Fall Fire Recovery Newsletter
View this email in your browser
It has been an active few months since our last newsletter and we would like to take a moment to acknowledge the challenges Big Thompson watershed and Northern CO communities have faced, but also to recognize the incredible resilience and strength our communities, first responders, and partners have displayed through these challenges.

Since our last newsletter, the Cameron Peak Fire grew to almost 209,000 acres, the largest wildfire in CO history, and within 7 days in October, the East Troublesome Fire grew to become the second largest fire in state history, burning 194,000 acres. Thousands of community members evacuated during this time and hundreds of homes and structures were lost, and the road to recovery is just beginning in an already unprecedented year.

BTWC wants to extend our deepest sympathies to those who lost their homes or were affected by the fires. While the significance of these losses cannot be overstated, the strength displayed by all those who fought to protect us also must be acknowledged—thousands of firefighters, police officers, sheriff’s deputies, emergency managers, and community leaders worked tirelessly for well over two months to bring the Cameron Peak Fire to 92% containment.

As BTWC and our partners move into post-fire recovery action, we will be offering a variety of resources and webinars to keep our partners and community members informed of community services and restoration efforts across the County. Providing communications and opportunities to help protect water quality in the Big Thompson and surrounding waterways and get on-the-ground recovery work off-the-ground.

Finally, with Thanksgiving approaching, it is a time to reflect on what we are thankful for. BTWC is extremely   thankful to those who fought and continue to fight to manage these wildfires, to the commitment and expertise of our partners, and to all those who support BTWC and our work. We would not be where we are without you.
