Torquay Community House Annual General Meeting
On Wednesday November 11 Torquay Community House held its first online Annual General Meeting. While we very much missed the wine and nibbles that normally accompany the AGM we were glad to acknowledge the triumphs and hard work of our Board of Management, staff and volunteers during this very challenging year.

This was a year like no other and it is easy to forget there was a world pre-pandemic so we'd like to acknowledge some of the wonderful work that occurred before lockdown.

Late last year we held a family violence forum 'Not in Our Town'. Thank you to all that attended and the panel of representatives from Victoria Police, the Sexual Assault and Family Violence Centre, Barwon Community Legal Service, Surf Coast Shire, The Orange Door, Bethany Community Support and advocacy organisation Broken to Brilliant. We finished the 2019 with the Pyjama Pop-up Shop fundraiser for Hope project Cambodia. Liz Hoban from Project Hope said it was one of their most successful events so thank you to everyone who came and bought!

2020 started with a slew of fun events including the launch of The Friendly Bean, International Women's Day at the Womens Sharing Shed Torquay and of course the Wonderful Outrageous Witches Luncheon bushfire fundraiser. The Witches Luncheon was one of the very last events before lockdown on the Surf Coast and raised nearly $4000. Thank you to all that attended and a special acknowledgement must go to the head witch herself, Julie Stevens and her coven of helpers who all put in so much effort to create a magical event.

All positions were vacated and elections were held to make up the new Board of Management. A special welcome must go to new Secretary Emily Fyffe  who is serving on the Board of Management for the first time. We look forward to working with you over the next year.
We would like to thank retiring Secretary Chris Farrow for all her hard work, on the Board, as a reception volunteer and as part of our catering committee. You have been an invaluable part of the Community House and will be sorely missed Chris!
 Hello Surfcoast Day Dec 4
Click the image to watch the video about Hello Surf Coast Day!
On Friday 4th December at 6pm, the entire Surf Coast will come together for a Hello Happy Hour to ‘meet and greet’ in every street, to celebrate a safe, post Covid community that welcomes and supports each other.  Imagine 30.5k people saying hello at the same time! That has to be a World Record?!

Why Hello Surfcoast Day?
A lot of us are feeling that Covid has torn apart lives and left a gaping hole in our community. Distancing has created an inability to hug and connect, and mask wearing has taken away our smiles. We are all well aware that loneliness is ripe in our neighbourhood and it's taking its toll on many.

We hope to help our community connect again and to let everyone know that people do care.  Every single HELLO is another reminder that we are not alone and that others do care.  We have other, bigger picture hopes that will result from this campaign, but it all starts with a simple HELLO.

We have Street Champions volunteering as we speak to lead their street and help bring people together (Covid appropriate of course - with masks, safe distancing and numbers being monitored). Become a Street Champion to organise your street's Happy Hour HERE.

Can't commit to being a champion? Then just bring your own nibbles, cup of tea or vino to the Happy Hour, introduce yourself and ask if your neighbours need anything, bring along a guitar and start a sing-a-long with your neighbours or... just cut, fill out and hand out the cards below
Fill out the Hello Cards and hand them to those you meet (Please remember to wear your mask and practice safe distancing at all times).

Download the flyer HERE for the Hello Cards and more info or go to www.HelloSurfCoast.com.au
Community organisations are coming together to create a Community Christmas to be held on Christmas Day. We are looking for volunteers to help on the day and leading up to the event. Those wishing to volunteer please call Trish on 0432 548 362.

For those wishing to attend there will be more information in the next Springboard and keep an eye on our social media channels.

Produced by the ABC and presented by Daniel Browing, a Bundjalung and Kullilli man, ‘Word Up’ takes you a journey through “diverse languages of Black Australia from Anmatyerre to Arrernte, from Bidjara to Bundjalung, from Nyungar to Ngaanyatjarra, from Yankunytjatjara to Yorta Yorta — one word at a time.”

Each episode ranges from four minutes to 10 minutes, so you can listen to a bunch in a short amount of time. Each episode asks guests to choose a word from their language and talk about the meaning behind it.

Torquay RSL Covid-restricted Remembrance Day
Cr Elect Paul Barker pays respects at Point Danger Service

Torquay RSL President Bob Tyler holds Covid-resricted Remembrance Day Service at Point Danger
Despite COVID restrictions, Torquay RSL held a limited number Remembrance Day Commemoration at Point Danger.

Ten persons were permitted to attend.

Remembrance Day commemorates the end of World War One, but has come to represent all those who have paid the ultimate price either during conflict or from mental or physical wounds brought home from any deployment.

At the eleventh hour of the eleventh month, Torquay RSL President, Bob Tyler, and a small band of veterans from all conflicts beginning with World War Two gathered in a windy, showery atmosphere at the Point Danger memorials.

Among those present were WW2 veteran Cec Browning who has not missed a Remembrance Day or ANZAC Day commemoration since he returned from serving in the Royal Australian Navy.

Following the ceremony when wreaths dedicated to those who had lost their lives were laid, members were able to pay their individual respects.

Councillor elect Paul Barker, an RAAF ex-serviceman, paid his respects to the fallen.

Because of COVID restrictions, all Torquay’s commemorations during 2020 have been restricted to only a few veterans.
WW2 Veteran Cec Browning awaits the beginning of Remembrance Service

Great News!

We have just received confirmation from the Surf coast Council that the Men’s Shed can re-open, next Tuesday, November 17, 2020, subject to Covid-19 constraints, including mandatory wearing of face masks.

We will however, still sign in (and out), take temperature checks, hand sanitizing and safe distancing measures, as we did initially.
Fingers crossed that another wave doesn’t happen – fingers (and toes) crossed! See you there!!
We are now halfway through term four and progressing well by zoom delivery. Thanks to signs of Covid restrictions gradually easing in Victoria,
the committee has been meeting to plan for the 2021 program, part of which is to develop a Covid-safe plan. While some activities will continue with zoom, a number of tutors and members are keen to return to face to face where possible. In order to achieve this we must comply with the demands of venues as well as our own Covid-safe preparations. We hope to have our 2021 courses available for enrolment in December.

Meanwhile tutor Jennifer Aquilina reports on the NON FICTION BOOK READERS, a group of about 12 who meet on the last Friday of each month (term time) at 2pm.  A topic, by mutual consent, is decided on the month prior.  Each member chooses a non-fiction book, reads it and writes a brief synopsis.

Jennifer says that “at our group's monthly meeting we each share the information we have gleaned from our book of choice and it’s always amazing at the variety of books and subjects arrived at pertaining to the topic chosen. Occasionally a couple of people will have selected the same aspect but rarely the same book!!

Non-Fiction Book Readers was the first U3A Surf Coast group to switch to Zoom during the Covid pandemic and whilst we all agree that ‘face to face’ meetings to share and ‘feel’ our chosen books is preferable, Zoom has enabled us to continue and enjoy discussion! Come and join us in 2021.”
Make your pet a star in our online pet show – and raise funds to End Trachoma

Did you know Australia is the world’s only developed country with trachoma, an infectious eye disease that can be prevented with good hygiene practices?  Trachoma is still present in remote Aboriginal communities and can lead to permanent blindness. The World Health Organisation has a global goal to eliminate trachoma by 2020 and the Rotary Club of Torquay is raising funds to help achieve this.
What is Pets on Parade?
Pets on Parade is an online pet show which will run for the month of November.  Just send us an image of your pet and donate at least $5 to enter.  We have categories of the dogs (funniest and golden oldie), cats (funniest and action cat), best non-traditional pet and best friends.

There are some great prizes to be won including a free consultation with Mobile Vet Geelong valued at $95 and gift vouchers from Torquay Toys.

Here is the
link to the Rotary Club’s web page where you will find the entry details and see your pet starring and the link to make a donation.

How will your donation support the End Trachoma project?
Our goal is to raise enough funds to put together 100 Toiletry Kits for children in the N.T. which will help to stop trachoma from spreading between children.  A toiletry kit consists of a face washer, hand towel, soap, soap container, toothbrush, toothpaste, toothpaste container, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, plastic drink container and a carry bag.

These kits will be distributed to children in and around Alice Springs and will assist in improving their hygiene.

Members of the Surf Coast Community are always welcome to join in the Torquay Rotary Club virtual meetings held via ZOOM 7pm Monday night to hear some good speakers and have some fun getting to know your local Rotarians. For more go to https://torquayrotary.org.au/
