Woodside Mayor Ned Fluet
Dear Neighbor,

I hope you are well and staying safe. Here is an important COVID-19 update.

San Mateo County Returns to Red Tier

Unfortunately, we are experiencing a sharp increase in the COVID-19 daily case rate statewide. Today, Governor Newsom announced that the State is putting an “emergency break” on the reopening plan under the Blueprint for a Safer Economy. This means that most counties in the state have moved back to the most restrictive tier of the Blueprint, which is the Purple/Widespread tier.

San Mateo County was moved backward as well but we were only moved back to the Red/Substantial tier.  This means that, effective tomorrow, the County is back to where it was prior to October 28 when we moved up from the Red to the Orange tier.

Here is what the move means for businesses in our County:
  • Amusement/Theme Parks: Must close again.
  • Zoos, Aquariums, and Museums: limited to 25% indoor capacity.
  • Bars, breweries, and distilleries: Bars, breweries, and distillery tasting rooms that do not offer food service must close.
  • Restaurants: Indoor dining is limited to 25% capacity.  Outdoor dining that adheres to distancing guidelines may continue.
  • Churches, Mosques, Synagogues, Temples, and Cultural Events: limited to 25% indoor capacity or 100 people, whichever is fewer.
  • Retail Stores and Libraries: Retail stores and libraries are limited to 50% indoor capacity.
  • Shopping Malls: Limited to 50% capacity, however, malls must keep common areas closed and reduce capacity at food courts in accordance with the indoor dining guidelines applicable to restaurants (25% capacity).
  • Gyms, fitness centers (including fitness centers located within hotels), Yoga Studios, and Dance Studios: Limited to 10% indoor capacity.  Indoor pools must close.  Businesses must also comply with the sanitation and distancing protocols in the State’s Industry Guidance.
  • Family Entertainment Centers and Indoor Playgrounds: Only outdoor family entertainment centers may open.
  • Higher Education Institutions: Indoor lectures and student gatherings are limited to 25% capacity or 100 people, whichever is less.
  • Movie Theaters: Limited to 25% indoor capacity or 100 people, whichever is less.
  • Offices for “non-essential” businesses: Must work remotely.
  • Professional Sports and Racetracks: No fans allowed.
  • Swimming Pools: Only outdoor pools may open.
  • Wineries: Limited to outdoor tastings only.
Governor Newsom also announced new guidance regarding face coverings. According to the state's health website, people in California must wear face coverings when they are outside of the home, unless one of the exemptions applies.

As County Manager Mike Callagy noted, “What this tell us is that all of us need to redouble our efforts to follow common-sense health and safety guidelines: wear your face covering, wash your hands, maintain social distancing and, above all, do not gather in close proximity to those outside your immediate household.”

Thank you and have a safe week.
