From the Team
“When faced with thorny problems, I take to the Latin concept of solvitur ambulando—literally, it is solved by walking,” says our Assistant Director Ho Han Peng, who upped his fitness game to combat “pan-xiety”. Read about Han's newfound appreciation for mobility during the pandemic and enjoy the guest cameo of “SMU Cat” 🐱
In 2019, 744 million kg of food was wasted in Singapore. Yet, over 10% of Singaporean households face food insecurity (the inability to meet basic dietary needs) at least once a month. On 30 September, the Lien Centre for Social Innovation joined Ashoka Singapore for a virtual dialogue on food sustainability. Panellists included Dr Dalvin Sidhu and Dr Tania Nagpaul, co-authors of our recent study on food insecurity, The Hunger Report. Catch the recaps here and here.
Last month, we were honoured to present the findings and recommendations from The Hunger Report to President Halimah Yacob when she visited The Food Bank Singapore. This was followed by a Q&A session between Madam President and the co-authors of the study, Dr Dalvin Sidhu and Dr Tania Nagpaul. Find out more.

On stillness

“This year has forced many of us, myself included, to be still. In the beginning, being still felt unproductive, even wasteful to me. But I’ve since learned that stillness takes work and practice. It is something that more people should celebrate—quietly.”

—Tasnim Abdul Hadi, Programme Manager

In Case You Missed It
“It's become a much more crowded, diverse and dynamic space with more avenues for volunteerism,” said our Assistant Director Ho Han Peng, who was a panellist at a webinar attended by over 220 participants and whose Guest of Honour was Speaker of Parliament Mr Tan Chuan-Jin. Titled “Re-imagining Singapore’s Social Sector: Resilient and Future-Ready”, the discussion centred around the key recommendations of a thought leadership report by the Covid-19 Taskforce for Non-Profits, consisting of an independent group of SMU students and alumni, as well as working professionals.
