Since March, we’ve all been asking ourselves, what will the holidays look like this year? In particular Thanksgiving, being one of the biggest travel times of the year, when families gather, share food and warm embraces, and congregate indoors around the table. With all of the modifications we’ve had to make this year in an effort to keep our families and loved ones safe, Thanksgiving will be no different. But for Dwayne Bergmann, it’s an opportunity to get creative, make new memories, and keep traditions alive with some very 2020 twists.
For Dwayne, Thanksgiving is all about the table. The setting, the food, the conversation, the energy.
Dwayne has fond memories of helping his mother set elaborate tablescapes complete with harvest inspired centerpieces and handmade seating cards per guest. In the kitchen with her expertise is where he discovered his love of baking, especially her pecan pie which has become a staple at his Thanksgiving table. Sometimes, the preparation that goes into the meal itself is where those everlasting memories are made! Plan to video chat with loved ones throughout the process and make it even more interactive by tackling tasks simultaneously. Set a recipe or centerpiece display so each household can make their own. While gathering may be limited, we can still connect with our would-be guests to keep traditions alive.
Thanksgiving is about getting the whole family involved. From cooking to decorating, Dwayne loves to include his little ones to pass down his family traditions and make new ones along the way. Bring the feeling of fall into your home with crafts inspired by the harvest hues. Decoupage orange, yellow, and red tissue paper onto paper cones. Fill with candy corn, caramel popcorn, or other festive treats for individual cornucopia snack cups! Task the kiddos with decorating cookies, making cards and sign, and recording holiday greetings where they share what they’re thankful for. Send their creations in a care package to those who could not join physically to spread gratitude and a little something special to loved ones this year.
As with any holiday at Dwayne’s house, it’s dessert that takes centerstage. This year he is putting a new spin on his mother’s pecan pie, opting for a chocolate bourbon version which he’ll be topping with a scoop of homemade maple flavored ice cream. Thanksgiving sides are as personal and unique as the individuals that make them. For Dwayne, no table is complete without mashed sweet potatoes, a healthy take on green bean casserole, and rustic garden herb biscuits with browned butter and molasses. Compliment the spread with a warm apple bourbon cocktail by mixing equal parts bourbon, apple cider and sparkling wine. Finish with a cinnamon stick stirrer and cheers to everything you have to be thankful for this year.
With so much to be grateful for, we at Dwayne Bergmann Interiors want to take a moment to thank our incredible partners, vendors and suppliers for the tireless work they do all year round. You help us bring our visions to life and inspire us to achieve what we never thought possible. Thank you, as always, for your partnership and sharing your talents with the DBI team.
