November ZOOM MEETING

Addressing Challenges Faced by Youth

Nevada County children and young adults are dealing with loneliness, hunger and homelessness, while often facing anxiety, depression and family trauma. And the COVID-19 pandemic has only created more issues for our youth.

Jennifer Singer has been committed to addressing the challenges and developing forward-thinking solutions to help our youth since she co-founded The Friendship Club in 1995. The well-known organization has helped almost 1,000 girls during the past quarter-century.

Today, Singer is Executive Director of Bright Futures for Youth, created with the recent merger of The Friendship Club and the NEO Youth Center, which started in 2008.

She will share the latest about Bright Futures for Youth and the nonprofit’s never-ending efforts to help children and young adults in the community. Whether it’s developing after-school classes and programs, teaching life skills or ensuring access to much-needed services – such as counseling, health care or housing – Singer has been a dedicated and visionary leader.

Her commitment to the community and its youth goes well beyond Bright Futures for Youth.

Singer, a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE), is a Nevada County Relief Fund Community Advisory Committee ex-officio member. Singer served as founding board president of Sierra Harvest and is Board Chair of the Center for Nonprofit Leadership. She serves as a Nevada City School District Board Trustee.

Singer was raised in Nevada County. She received a degree in Communications from the University of Colorado at Boulder and has studied nonprofit administration in a master’s degree program at the University of San Francisco. Jennifer is a graduate of the Nevada County Leadership Institute and the county’s Citizens Academy.

She is a Nevada County Relief Fund Community Advisory Committee ex-officio member and also serves as Chair of the Continuum of Care (COC) Youth Committee, addressing issues of homelessness in Nevada County. Jennifer has served on the board of directors of Sierra Harvest, including as a founding board president and as a founding board member, Board Chair and two-term board member of the Center for Nonprofit Leadership. Local Elections: Nevada County Board of Education

Last month, BPWNC recommended to members the following non-partisan slate of candidates for the county education board: Julie Baker, Susan Clarabut, Louise Johnson and Timothy May. This slate had been endorsed by Holly Hermansen, Terry McAteer and Skip Houser,  former (and highly respected) County Superintendents of Schools, as well as by the California Teachers Association.  Explaining why he decided to run for the school board, Timothy May related that he decided to do so this summer, after his opponent, the incumbent school board member for area 2, Ashley Neumann, participated in a demonstration and disrupted a school board meeting to oppose Nevada Union’s carefully considered decision to use distance learning as the safest instructional model for everyone, given the COVID epidemic. Neumann was joined by a slate of like-minded likely disruptors.  May and his running mates felt compelled to run for the elective seats, to take the reins as qualified and trusted professionals dedicated to doing what is best for area schools and students, not sowing discord and chaos.

Full election results are not yet in (as of Thursday, Nov. 5th). But, we directors are fairly confident that the slate we recommended will prevail.  All four are running ahead of their competitors, although May’s lead is a small one.

Thanks to all of you, all of us, who took the opportunity to vote for experienced, competent educators for our school board.  Should the final count of ballots show that they won their seats, we wish them every success, trusting that they will work hard for our school districts and students.

Thank you!

Greetings BPW Members & Friends:

Saddened we cannot enjoy our annual holiday auction fundraiser, your BPW Board has decided to “celebrate giving back” this year. The board voted to make Community Beyond Violence (CBV), Nevada County’s foremost domestic violence and sexual assault support organization, the recipient of our generosity.  In the spirit of holiday thankfulness for all that we may have been given, please join in to help make the situation more equitable for women in our own community who are dealing with domestic violence.  A few facts:
  • The emergency shelter and client service center remains open and fully operational during COVID-19. Protocols and policies were developed to maintain a safe and healthy environment for both clients and staff.
  • The Housing Team is working with community property managers and landlords who have housed over 100 clients in safe and stable long-term housing.
  • A new web chat portal and text line was implemented for survivors to access service more easily.
CBV could use such items as gift cards for gas, groceries, or department stores, Amazon, Visa or MasterCard;
For financial donations, here is a sample of amounts and what they cover:
  • $25 – Emergency food & clothing
  • $50 – Cleaning supplies, disinfectant and masks for staff at the client service center
  • $100 – One-night emergency stay in a motel for a family when the shelter is full
  • $250 – Two-week stay for a family at the shelter
CBV’s year-end fundraising campaign is You don’t need a cape to be a hero. We hope each BPW member will make a donation on behalf of BPW to CBV in any amount during their Heroes campaign that continues from now until December 31. They hope to raise $10,000 that will be used to continue meeting the challenges of COVID-19. To contribute, visit CBV’s website at cbv.org to access the “Donate” button. Be sure to indicate that it is from a BPW member by writing “BPW” in the Dedication Heart. Or send a check made out to Community Beyond Violence, P.O. Box 484, Grass Valley, CA 95945. Please include a note indicating that it is from a BPW member. A heartfelt thanks to everyone for your generosity and your devotion to BPW and all we stand for.
