Better Value Sooner Safer Happier

Helping organisations to deliver better outcomes and foster a more humane world of work

It is truly exciting that Better Value Sooner Safer Happier (BVSSH) Communities have now mobilised in each global region, supported by inspiring local leadership teams. Shared learning, collaboration and community, sharing patterns and antipatterns to be experimented on in context, is key to better outcomes for all. It has also been a pleasure to launch the BVSSH training curriculum, with BVSSH Foundations delivered to the first cohort in December. Every day I come across new examples of the BVSSH philosophy spreading. This growing momentum is an indicator that BVSSH is the right approach for our time. Despite (in some cases because of) the continuing pandemic, it is good to see organisations increasingly embracing and supporting more sustainable and engaging ways of working.  I look forward to sharing the learning journey with you.

Community
Regional BVSSH communities established

Better Value Sooner Safer Happier (BVSSH) is a movement for leaders at all levels in all roles wanting to improve outcomes in their organisations.

Three regional BVSSH Communities have been established to enable sharing of patterns and antipatterns. This sharing is by the community, for the community and consists of real world, concrete stories and examples shared by members who are on the same journey. Diverse and inclusive, everyone is welcome, this is not about 'Agile' or IT only - all roles and all levels of knowledge are welcome: Business, Change, Procurement, Compliance, Risk, HR, Finance, as well as IT!

The three Communities cater for different regional timezones and collaborate via Slack and video. If you are interested to join, please signup to gain access to the collaboration space and schedules.

The Outcome Hypothesis, a Primer

Achieving Better Value Sooner Safer Happier in the context of product development requires a shift from fixed, big, up-front designed solutions to outcome hypotheses with experimentation. From output to outcomes. From following a fixed plan to maximizing value.

Key considerations:

1: Emergence
We can’t accurately predict what people want, or how to build it. The system of work needs to be optimized for fast feedback, safe-to-fail experiments. Aim to get the thinnest vertical slice of real value in the hands of real customers: value carpaccio.

2: Nested outcomes
A quarterly time period is just beyond the knowledge threshold and yet not too far away. A quarterly business outcome contains smaller (e.g. monthly) ‘experiments’ to test the hypothesis. There is also a connection to larger annual and multi-year outcomes, business-unit level strategic items. This nested structure is an incredibly powerful way to introduce transparency across your organisation.

3: The Outcome hypothesis
Language matters and articulating product development work as hypotheses creates a clear expectation that there is uncertainty. It creates an expectation of experimentation, that people need to be empowered to use their own brains, that not all paths succeed, that solutions need to be discovered.
