Still Waters Still Run Deep!

By Steve Zimmerman

One perk about where my wife and I live is the proximity to metro areas with major airports as well as the Appalachian Mountains. With the fall weather we have been having recently, it didn’t take much nudging to get in the car and spend some time on the Blue Ridge Parkway for a day excursion. Once we got to the parkway we stopped at the visitor’s center overlooking the James River to get some exercise. We had been in the car for a while so we decided to walk on the pedestrian bridge to the other side of the river.

That is when I had two types of epiphany. As I looked out over the river, it looked so peaceful in this fall setting. However, once I looked down at the river from the bridge I could see the leaves that were caught in the current going quickly downstream.  I froze in my tracks as to what God was sharing with me there.

In ministry we run across so many people that we serve that seem to have everything going on so well. They greet us with a warm welcome each Sunday. They may the first to volunteer for a new ministry. The list goes on and on. They look so calm in their everyday life. However, there could be fast currents that are swirling around them. Inside they are barely hanging on with everything that they have! As we enter into the unusual holiday season due to the pandemic, let’s pay real close attention to each other. Even the folks who seem to have it all together may be the ones who need our support the most.

The second phase of the revelation was more uplifting. To say that 2020 has been a historic year would be an understatement! In March our world shut down. Many of us in ministry were wondering what God was doing. We seemed to be dead in the water. On the surface, it seems nothing was moving. However, God was and is! Months later we are continually finding out new avenues of doing ministry.  His currents of love have carried us further down the river than we could have ever imagined. In this holiday season what a great reminder of encouragement that we serve a God that still provides hope for a new day!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us at the Barnabas Partnership. May your new year be full of hope and blessings as you serve our Lord.
