Palo Alto City Library
The Palo Alto City Library wishes you a very happy and safe holiday season. This wasn’t the year any of us expected, but we’re hopeful for a better 2021! Here is what’s happening at the Library this December.
We're still open for Sidewalk Service. Be safe! Wash hands. Mask up. Social distance.
The Library will continue to provide Sidewalk Service though the County is now in the Purple Tier. To find out more about the tier requirements, visit the Santa Clara County Public Health website.

December Holiday Closure Dates

  • Closed December 25 and January 1
  • All Library services end at 5 PM on December 24 and 31
Please cancel holds you no longer need.
This is a friendly reminder to please cancel any holds you no longer need. Staff work hard to have your holds ready for you and some items have long wait lists. Many holds never get picked up, staying on the shelves for days, when they can easily get passed on to the next person waiting. We want to make sure that everyone can enjoy our items in a timely manner, so please call (650-329-2436), email (librarycirculation@cityofpaloalto.org) or log into your account to cancel any holds you no longer want or need. Thank you!
LINK+ starts November 30.
LINK+ is back starting November 30. You can now request materials from other library systems to be sent to Mitchell Park and Rinconada Libraries. Materials can be picked up and returned during Sidewalk Service hours.

2021 Kids & Teens Writing Contest
It is time once again for the Annual Palo Alto Library Writing Contest! Students in grades 3–12 are invited to participate by addressing this year's prompt: You are a children’s book author, write an #ownvoices story for children that shares your family’s ethnic background/traditions and/or culture.
Virtual Storytimes will take a break from December 21 through the end of the year. Our storytellers will return on Monday, January 4! You can still listen to stories, songs and finger plays by our librarians on our YouTube channel!
Dewey the humanoid robot
Have you been keeping up with our Robo Dojo Anytime, Anywhere series on our YouTube channel? Watch our latest Episode 6: A Halloween Game and learn how to program Dewey, the library's humanoid robot to become a chatbot and develop your own Halloween game. Everything you'll need to program our virtual instance of Dewey on your home computer is in the description of the video tutorial.

Look for more Virtual Events on our website, including storytimes, book clubs and ESL programs!

Staff Picks

Microadventures by Alastair Humphreys
Microadventures: In a time when it's tough to travel anywhere, this book is a fun read. It's UK-centered, but it sparked many ideas of how I can have an expedition-like experience without straying far from my neighborhood.
-Marleah, Supervising Librarian

The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy
The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse: I put this beautifully illustrated book on hold out of curiosity, after seeing the book in the library. After reading it, I realized how timely this book is the current time we live in. It's about friendship and a different way of looking at life.
-Leslie, Library Specialist

Rabbit's Bad Habits by Julian Gough
Rabbit's Bad Habits: You'll never guess Rabbit's bad habit – and when you learn what it is, prepare to laugh out loud in this hilarious new early chapter book.
-Diana, Supervising Librarian
