Dear Parents and Guardians,

Thanksgiving is almost here!  I remember thinking to myself at the beginning of the school year, “If we can just get in two full weeks of in-person instruction...” Yet here we are approaching 12 weeks of in-person instruction thanks to our amazing teachers and staff. I am thankful for you, for sharing your children and entrusting us with their education and safety. I am thankful for our students and their hard work and resilience during this uncertain time and for showing up every day whether in person or virtually.

As you prepare for Thanksgiving celebrations, we urge you to follow the CDC recommendations and Indiana guidelines, including the recent restrictions on the size of gatherings imposed by Governor Holcomb especially if you are planning on expanding your celebrations beyond your immediate household.

Social distancing is one of the best COVID-19 deterrents and we should be practicing this guideline not only at school/work but also outside of school/work. Please social distance as much as possible and do not socialize with recently confirmed positive COVID-19 individuals.

Lastly, continue to screen your children at home. DO NOT send your child to school if he/she:

  • Has any COVID-related symptoms such as congestion, cough, sore throat, fever, shortness of breath, diarrhea, headache, nausea, muscle pain, chills, new loss of taste or smell that is not otherwise explained.

  • Has been in close contact with (within 6 feet or more than 15 minutes) with anyone confirmed with COVID-19 within the last two weeks.

  • Your child or someone in the same household is awaiting COVID-19 results.

Report Cards -  K-8 report cards will be sent home on Monday, November 30th. Please discuss your child's report card with him/her as this is an important part of helping your child succeed in school and it also helps your child know you are an active participant in his or her education. Make sure you read through the teacher comments as they can be helpful in understanding the grade received and the areas your child is struggling or excelling in! Remember, our specials will have a Pass/Fail grading scale this year.

This week, our 4th grade class will plan and attend the mass with the 1st grade Immersion class. If you have a child in either of those grades, you are welcome to come and celebrate Mass in the church, otherwise you can view the live-stream Mass via Zoom, please look for the link later in this newsletter.

Reminders

  • Spiritwear Day is this Friday, November 20th. Spirit wear consists of Holy Cross issued or approved outerwear including shirts by Holy Cross sports team, club or school-sponsored activity, and students must wear uniform pants.

  • Thanksgiving Break - There will be NO SCHOOL on Wednesday November 25th- Friday, November 27th.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving break!!

Queridos padres y guardianes,

Recordatorios

This past Friday Nancy Takach retired as one of our parish part-time administrative assistants… After serving as religious education secretary for five years at Holy Cross, Nancy transitioned to parish secretary at St. Stanislaus in 1988. When the two parishes temporarily merged, Nancy continued as a parish staff member working out of our parish center, and then as one of the Holy Cross administrative assistants after Saint Stanislaus regained its status as an independent parish. Nancy has volunteered at Holy Cross in various capacities for close to forty years, including as a member of the parish religious education program, the parish choir and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Last January, at the celebration of the Feast of Blessed Basil Moreau, C.S.C., at Notre Dame, Nancy received
the Spirit of Holy Cross Award for her support of the ministry of the Congregation of Holy Cross Priests and Brothers here at Holy Cross Parish. I’m pleased to announce that we have hired Valerie Allen as our new part time administrative assistant. Valerie worked part-time at a parish in North Carolina a number of years ago. Returning to her hometown of South Bend, she most recently worked at Memorial Heath Care…I especially wish to thank Nancy for her years of dedicated service to our parish community. We’ll still be seeing Nancy around the parish, so there’s no farewell needed, just a simple but heart-felt thank you as well as congratulations on your retirement! God’s blessings be with you in this new phase of your life’s journey.
