Support Native Students Attending Arizona Law

University of Arizona Law and the Indigenous Peoples Law and Policy (IPLP) Program are preparing for another successful Huerta Scholarship campaign this Giving Tuesday, taking place December 1.

This Giving Tuesday, please support the next generation of Native lawyers attending University of Arizona Law by donating to the Huerta Scholarship!

Despite great advances, the representation of Native Americans within the legal field remains around one percent, according to ABA figures. The Huerta Scholarship is a vital component of University of Arizona Law’s commitment to increasing the representation of Native Americans in the practice of law. Thanks to your support, University of Arizona Law has one of the largest groups of Native law students in the country.

With your support, last year we raised more than $16,700 for Native students attending University of Arizona Law. This year our goal is to raise $20,000 in support of our Native law students.

Judge HuertaThe Huerta Scholarship was established in 2014 in honor of Judge Lawrence Huerta. Judge Huerta, a member of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe, was the first Native American to graduate from University of Arizona Law (class of ’53) and be licensed to practice law in Arizona. Throughout his illustrious career, Judge Huerta worked tirelessly to increase access to education for Native students, promote tribal sovereignty, and lead Native Nation building efforts.

The Huerta Scholarship provides vital support to Native law students attending University of Arizona Law who are increasing access to education for Native students and championing the rights of Native American communities and individuals. Thanks to the support of Huerta Scholarship donors, Native students are able to realize their dreams of attending law school and continue the living legacy of Judge Huerta.

Invest in the Success of Native Law Students

My name is Amanda Niemann and I am a first-year law student at University of Arizona Law.

I want to be an advocate for Native American tribes, especially Native children. The best way for me to do that is to attend University of Arizona Law to learn from the incredible faculty at the Indigenous Peoples Law and Policy Program and learn how I can help my Native American community. The Huerta Scholarship gave me the ability to come to Arizona and provided me with a financial safety net to begin my law career. I am so grateful for this scholarship because it allowed me to move across the country and start a whole new life centered on advocating for tribal communities like the Navajo Nation.

January in Tucson

Given the ongoing, global pandemic, the Indigenous Peoples Law and Policy Program and our partners at the Indigenous Governance Program have decided to move January in Tucson (JIT) 2021 to a fully online format in hopes of accommodating as many people as possible.

From January 4 to 30, JIT 2021 will be live-streamed via the Zoom web conferencing platform. In order to do our part during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have reduced the JIT 2021 registration rate to $500 per-course for participants who are not enrolled in a degree program at the University of Arizona.

For three weeks each year, the January in Tucson intensive education session brings together distinguished faculty in the field of Indigenous peoples’ governance and rights, and gives them the opportunity to teach and hold discussions with Indigenous leaders, practitioners, and community members, as well as other individuals interested in Indigenous affairs.

Tribal Professionals Cohort

The Native Nations Institute’s (NNI) Tribal Professionals Cohort (TPC) is a year-long professional development program designed to equip Native leaders with knowledge and tools for Native Nation Building. With a focus on Nation Building principles — sovereignty, capable governing institutions, cultural match, strategic orientation, and public-spirited leadership — participants will explore how to strengthen these critical elements for their nation as they work to lead change in their communities. TPC members will receive FULL registration for three January In Tucson 2021 Online (JIT) continuing education courses on Indigenous governance, law and policy.

The NNI TPC will participate in the University of Arizona’s Indigenous Governance Program’s JIT event. JIT is possible through a partnership between University of Arizona’s Indigenous Peoples Law and Policy Program and the University of Arizona’s Native Nations Institute. Due to the current circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, the TPC will meet and attend JIT virtually starting in December 2020 and JIT 2021.
