What’s in a Name? Dun Leary – Kingstown – Dún Laoghaire: A Visual History
A Decade of Centenaries Programme

In 1821 the name Dunleary was changed to Kingstown after King George IV’s visit to this bustling and rapidly developing town. In 1920 it was officially given the name Dún Laoghaire, referring back to the original Irish name for Dunleary. It was a deliberate political act during the War of Independence.

In 2019 dlr Libraries acquired nearly 700 postcards of the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown area from the sale of the Seamus Kearns Collection of Postcards. These images form the basis of a publication entitled What’s in a Name? Dun Leary – Kingstown – Dún Laoghaire: A Visual History (available from Dubray Books, price €10), an accompanying online exhibition and a series of talks and videos to mark the centenary of the name change. In addition, a Primary Schools resource featuring five Lesson Plans for teachers has been prepared by Séamus Cannon and Ríonach O Callaghan in association with Blackrock Education Centre - https://www.scoilnet.ie/

Exhibition and publication curated and edited by David Gunning, dlr Archivist in Residence, Nigel Curtin, Local Studies Librarian and dlr LexIcon Librarian Marian Thérèse Keyes.

This initiative is supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media as part of the Decade of Centenaries 2012-2023 programme.

Outreach programme in Nursing Homes

Cuairt agus Cultúr is a cultural programme run by dlr Libraries and Arts Office in Residential Care settings for older people in the County. Poetry, Childhood and Tatty

Thursday 19 November at 7pm

Explore the emotional pull of childhood with three original and very different poets. Eithne Hand's much-anticipated first collection Fox Trousers will be published by Salmon in 2020. Using her spare and wry style, she captures the magic and poignancy of childhood. James Harpur is the author of six collections, most recently The White Silhouette (Carcanet 2019). With assured thought-provoking poems, he delves into the complexity of adolescence and growing up. Meanwhile, Liz Quirke's first collection The Road, Slowly (Salmon 2018) breaks new ground in Irish poetry by following the journey to motherhood for a same-sex couple and explores what it means to create a family.
This reading draws on themes raised by Christine Dwyer-Hickey's Tatty, and brings unique insights and perspectives. It is part of dlr Libraries' series of events for Dublin: One City One Book 2020 and the event is curated by Rosamund Taylor.

Depicting Diversity- Children’s Art Workshops

Calling all Primary School teachers of 4th-6th classes in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown!

We have an exciting new opportunity for you to take part in workshops and an art exhibition. This project which is supported by the Creative Ireland Programme arose out of the Black Lives Matter movement, with dlr Libraries working in close partnership with the National Gallery of Ireland with additional resources from Children’s Books Ireland. The project was conceived and co-ordinated by artist Mags Harnett and the final artwork from the workshops will be a playful exhibition (onsite and online) that will celebrate diversity. It is also linked with the Primary School Curriculum and explores the SPHE strand on self-identity and relationships with others.

Each participating school will receive a pack which includes books and art materials from dlr Libraries and resources from the National Gallery of Ireland and Children’s Books Ireland. The workshops (in 2 parts per class) will take place between mid-November and mid-December. Booking essential by emailing dlrlexiconlib@dlrcoco.ie

Scéal Trail programme

Join dlr Libraries online for some wonderful events connected to our new outdoor reading initiative - dlr Scéal Trail. dlr Scéal Trail is an outdoor story reading project that can be enjoyed by young and old alike, and ideally together as a family unit.

Events include readings of Geansaí Ottó, as well as design your own jumper or geansaí for Ottó, as he doesn't really love his grandmother's designs! We also have a knitting workshop for children and their parent/grandparent/ uncle/godparent or guardian. Even if they are at remote locations to each other, child and adult will knit lovely fairy blankets together, perfect for the fairy followers in your family!

Aoife Munn will be on hand to create some natural crafts, made from materials that can be found close by in nature or on your woodland walks. And Róisín Hahessy, illustrator of Geansaí Ottó, will be live all the way from Brazil for some illustration and drawing workshops, how exciting! Events are suitable for schools and families.

Plays in the Park series: Antigone

Saturday 28 Nov at 2.00pm online
Tickets €5 each

A rehearsed reading of a new version of Antigone, Colin Murphy’s new play is based on Antigone by Sophocles, setting it in present day Dún Laoghaire amidst a contagion outbreak and the underlying migration crisis in Europe.

The play aims to draw out contemporary resonances, provoking insight into the problems and conflicts of today: the trauma of not being able to properly mourn our dead; the extreme restriction of individual rights in the name of the greater good; the potential abuse of an emergency to consolidate state power and spread surveillance; the heightened fear of the other, of outsiders.

This reading will be recorded via Zoom from the actors' homes and broadcast on Vimeo/YouTube. Ticket holders will receive a link in advance of the viewing time. Performance available online from 2pm Saturday 28 November and the link will remain live until 2pm on Monday 30 November.

With support from the Arts Council and dlr Libraries via the Creative Ireland Programme.
