NC Iowa Agronomy Connection Newsletter

November 23, 2020 | Vol. 7, Issue 17

Events, Pesticide Continuing Ed Opportunities, and CCA CEUs

This whole issue is devoted to events and how to meet your pesticide, both private and commercial, continuing education credits as well opportunities for Certified Crop Adviser Credits. We all recognize the COVID-19 situation is rapidly worsening in Iowa so please note, what I include in this newsletter today may drastically change by the time the event is scheduled to occur. Always doublecheck to make sure you know the current status of programs.  I am going to ask for your patience and flexibility as we all work our way through this. Priority one is the health and well-being of our clients and Extension staff.  NOTE: If you are planning to attend any in-person events you will be required to wear a mask. If you are sick we ask that you kindly stay home. NOTE 2: Pre-registration is required for all events. There will be plenty of opportunities to meet all of your continuing education requirements.

Commercial Pesticide Applicators

Commercial pesticide applicators that need to attend a continuing instruction course (CIC) yet this fall are encouraged to make plans to complete that training as soon as possible. County Extension offices often have many CICs scheduled each day as well as other events so scheduling is tight, plus social distancing limits attendance. Finally, due to staffing over the Holidays, many offices have a cut off date for training. Upcoming events include:

Dec. 2: Pest Control Operators (categories 7A, 7B, 8, 10), starts at 9:00 AM -contact your County Extension Office.
Greenhouse (categories 3G, 3O, 10), available in fall, arrange showing with County Extension Office.

Fumigation: Pesticide applicators needing to complete a continuing education course on fumigation to maintain certification now have a self-study Ecourse available to them until Dec 31. Visit this link to learn more about this opportunity: 2020 Fumigation Continuing Instruction Course.

Please contact your County Extension Office via the link above to schedule your training. NOTE:  If you normally receive your C-CIC via the Integrated Crop Management Conference or a Crop Advantage Meeting those conferences are not happening this year due to COVID-19  so please make alternative arrangements. One alternative is the Ag Chem Dealer Update (virtual) meetings listed below for more details.

Private Pesticide Applicators

I have cancelled all of my private pesticide applicator meetings for December. As of now, the meetings I have scheduled for Jan-March are still planned.  I will add additional face-to-face meetings in March and April as needed so stay tuned for details. I am still planning to offer several ZOOM sessions to County Extension Offices and some counties offices are planning to show the DVD to meet training requirements, but because some county offices are closed to the public or staffed on a limited basis due to COVID, please call in advance to inquire about alternatives.  I assure you we are working to provide other options for you and there will be plenty of opportunities to meet your private applicator continuing education requirements. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions or concerns.   As a reminder, all January Crop Advantage meetings have also been cancelled for January 2021, so if you attended your private applicator training at one of those events, please plan to make alternative arrangements.
Here is the list of my currently scheduled Private Pesticide Applicator continuing education courses.

Certified Crop Advisers

The International Certified Crop Adviser board approved a process for CCAs to request a 12-month, one time extension that will allow them to permanently change their CEU cycle if they were prevented from earning the required CEUs due to Covid-19. Please contact your Iowa CCA representative for details.
Events

The Ag Chem Dealer Updates are now being offered virtually on December 8 or 15. These meetings are designed for seed, chemical and fertilizer dealers, crop consultants, farm managers and agronomists.  These virtual events have been approved for Commercial Pesticide Continuing Education requirements and CCA credits.  Meeting details and registration are available at http://www.aep.iastate.edu/acu/

University of Minnesota Extension and the Minnesota Office of Soil Health are hosting the Soil Management Summit as two, half-day virtual meetings on December 15 and 16. Click here for more information and registration.

CropsTV! Coming soon to a device near you!
For 2020-2021 CropsTV webinars will replace the annual Integrated Crop Management Conference and the Crop Advantage Series winter extension meetings. CropsTV will provide the convenience of viewing at home, office or anywhere there’s an internet connection. Live webinars will still allow interaction with specialists, presenters and panelists. On-demand viewing of topics allows schedule flexibility. Participants can select from over 45 topics from ISU faculty and staff as well as invited guest presenters.

The 10-week program launches Dec. 1, 2020 and continues through Feb. 4, 2021. Live webinars are scheduled each week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9-10 a.m. and Wednesdays at 1 p.m. Recordings of previous webinars as well as additional topics will be available for on-demand viewing throughout the program. Webinars will be a combination of live presentations and pre-recorded content with a live question and answer session allowing interaction with presenters.

CropsTV replaces the Integrated Crop Management Conference and the Crop Advantage Series for this winter, however, these two programs are scheduled to return next year. CropsTV was developed to reach this audience conveniently, safely and effectively during the current COVID-19 concerns.

Registration for CropsTV is $45 and includes all live webinar broadcasts, on-demand viewing of previous webinars and over 45 CCA credits. Online registration IS NOW OPEN!  Additional information is available at www.aep.iastate.edu/cropstv  For questions, contact ANR Program Services via email at cropstv@iastate.edu
