Terrific Sunday Model UN with Students from U. City and Elsewhere

Thanks to the organization of their teacher, Anne Cummings, several University City students gave up time on a Sunday afternoon to participate in a practice Model UN session. Civitas invited other students new to the program as well, so there were over 15 student delegates who discussed a resolution on Child Militia in Somalia for nearly an hour. Even though it was a practice session, the questions asked and amendments suggested by novice participants were top-notch. It was a fun and productive event for all and provided valuable insight for the Civitas staff on how to organize upcoming sessions.

The Pulitzer Center invites teachers and students to join us on Tuesday, November 17, at 4:30pm EST for a one-hour webinar on The 1857 Project. This webinar will be led by Pulitzer Center education staff, journalist William Freivogel, and educator Christina Sneed.

Inspired by The 1619 Project from The New York Times MagazineThe 1857 Project from Gateway Journalism Review explores the history of race in St. Louis, Missouri and Illinois. It is called The 1857 Project because of the important events that happened in St. Louis that year, such as the Dred Scott decision and the Lincoln-Douglas debates. This 80-page spring issue explores the history of race in the land of Dred Scott through visual and written pieces from journalists, activists, students, and educators.

In this one-hour webinar for educators, the Pulitzer Center education staff will first revisit journalism and education resources connected to The 1619 Project.

You can register by clicking here.

A subway train in Spijkenisse, Netherlands was saved from a spectacular crash on Monday, November 2, when it burns through buffers and landed on an artwork in the shape of a whale tail. There were no passengers on board and the train operator got out unharmed.  Robin Utrecht/ANP/AFP/Getty Images
