How can a Biden administration strengthen the United States’ role at the International Financial Institutions?

The Bank Information Center welcomes the election of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as the next President and Vice President of the United States. We look forward to working with the new administration to improve the governance and operation of the international financial institutions (IFIs) in which the U.S. is a member. The U.S. has historically played a strong leadership role at many of the IFIs, championing reforms that enhance accountability, inclusion, and sustainability in their work. We provide several recommended steps the Biden administration can take to prioritize engagement with the IFIs.

What does it mean for the World Bank to take a stance against reprisals?

The World Bank Group has acknowledged the serious issue of reprisals and retaliation against project stakeholders in recent statements and commitments to zero tolerance of these actions. It is now critical that the institution put in place clear requirements and procedures for identification and prevention of, and response to, reprisals and retaliation. We look at some of the gaps in available and actionable information, and how the Bank can adapt its practices to make information work for these stakeholders.

Project Monitoring

BIC documents many of the projects we are working with partners to monitor with pages on our website. BIC recently started monitoring the impacts of a number of health projects on marginalized groups, including in Rwanda, Cambodia, and the Gambia, in order to encourage more inclusive project design and implementation. BIC continues to track the World Bank's COVID-19 related projects by updating our project monitoring spreadsheet "COVID-19 World Bank Emergency Response: Projects Repository."
