Happy Autumn

We had a great spring and summer handing out seeds. We gave out over 240 seed packets to Richmond gardeners. We're now planning for our 2021 season and need your input.

Seed Library

We had a great, but unusual seed library season and we wanted to say thanks to everyone that participated. We are planning for our 2021 season and appreciate your feedback.

If you have used our seed library, another seed library, save seeds on your own or have never event thought of saving seeds, please fill out the survey here.

Saving Your Seeds

Saving seeds is easier than you think. For many, you can let the plant go to seed and then harvest the seeds.

The easiest plants are:

  • Tomatoes
    • Cover the seeds with water to create a mould that breaks the protective coating
  • Lettuce
    • Collect the seed from the dandelion-like head into a bag
  • Peas & Beans
    • Leave pods to dry on the vine
    • Pick and pop beans and peas out of the pod
Leave the fruit or seeds on the plant as long as you can. The longer they are on the plant, the more sugar will be stored in the seed, and the better the germination rate.

Leave all the seeds to fully dry. They need to snap or shatter before being stored away. Seeds will start to sprout with warmth or moisture.

Label with the variety and year and store in a cool, dark place. Seeds will last about 3 years depending on the plant and how much sugar was stored in the seed.
