Newtown Residents' Association Monthly Meeting
Monday 16th November 2020

7.30-9pm at Newtown Hall, 71 Daniell St

This month we welcome members of the Wellington City Council Engagement and Consultation Team, who have two topics to discuss with us:

Innovating Streets
WCC has funding from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency to co-design a "Placemaking Parklets" pilot with the Newtown community. The aim is the creation of people friendly spaces in our neighbourhoods. They had a pop-up space in Riddiford St on Saturday - see below!

The WCC Long Term Plan
a note from Diane Livingston and Clare Lundon, Engagement and Consultation Advisors coming to the meeting-
"Every three years Council reviews the city’s Long-term Plan. This sets the direction for the next 10 years, outlines priorities, how much it all costs, and where the money might come from.

As we draft this year’s Long-term Plan we have some extra demands to think about, including big infrastructure costs, earthquake strengthening, and the Central Library work.  That means we are going to have to make some choices.

We’d really like your help.  We have a short priority sorting activity that we are doing with communities and we’re inviting you to do this."
This seems like an excellent opportunity to have some early input into the big decisions that WCC are going to have to make in the coming years - do come and get involved!
See more here - https://www.letstalk.wellington.govt.nz/long-term-plan There is a Questionnaire there for public input - open for responses until 30th November.

All welcome - come and join in the discussion!
More about "Innovating Streets"

Did you see the team at the "Placemaking Pop-Up" in Riddiford St outside Black Coffee and The Friendly Bakery on Saturday?
The idea is to create attractive, vibrant places that make space for people and help to support local businesses. The WCC Team are wanting to work with community members about just how this can be realised. Come to our meeting on Monday - see above - to get involved!
Predator Free Wellington

Now that they have cleared the Miramar Peninsular of rats, possums, stoats and weasels, Predator Free Wellington are turning their attention to the area from Island Bay to the CBD - including Newtown of course! They will be adding their work across the Town Belt and other public reserves to that of Predator Free Mt Cook and Newtown, who have been promoting backyard trapping for several years.

We had hoped that PFW would come to our meeting next week, but they have a clash - they are finalists in the Biosecurity Awards, which are on that night - we wish them all the best for success, and we will welcome them to a meeting early next year instead.
Kāinga Ora Development in Coromandel St

This is a message from Josh Clarke, the Stakeholder Relationship Manager:
"Thanks to everyone who attended the community update session on 7 October for the two developments at 124-130 and 131 Coromandel Street – see the link for presentation slides and posters here www.kaingaora.govt.nz/coromandel.

In late October we submitted resource consent applications for both developments to Wellington City Council. The submitted drawings files are available from the links below for each development.

124-130 Coromandel St 131 Coromandel St As previously discussed Wellington City Council will assess our applications and provide feedback and we will update you with progress."
WCC Draft Spatial Plan

The written submissions are in and now WCC are working through hearings for oral submissions and round table forum discussions with submitters who want to follow up on what they said in writing.
