Putting on Your Trauma Lens: Recognizing and Responding to Child Adversity

What: Special Education Professional Development for ALL Teachers
When: Thursday, November 19 at 6:30pm EASTERN
Where: Webinar via Zoom
Who: Guest Presenter - Dr. Heather Forkey, MD
Coordinator - Evelyn Sullivan, NAD Director for Early Childhood, REACH
Coordinator - Lileth Coke, Atlantic Union Conference Assistant Director

Students of all ages often experience significant adversity, events which effect their ability to function in the classroom and beyond.  Expanding evidence from molecular biology, genomics, immunology and neuroscience links the early experience of trauma with subsequent impacts on health, development, behavior and academic achievement.  Yet childhood experience does not need to define anyone’s future.
How trauma impacts the developing brain, how children can be impacted and protected, what explains the variable response to adversity and the challenges of preventing and recognizing the effect of trauma on children will be explored. Most importantly, Dr. Forkey will share practical strategies to use in your classroom.
This webinar is designed for all amazing teachers! You won’t want to miss this 1 ½ webinar! Register today to reserve your spot!

Heather C. Forkey, MD, is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Pediatric Vice Chair for Wellness at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and Division Director for the Child Protection Program and Foster Children Evaluation Service (FaCES) of the UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center.  She serves as the Medical Director for the Child Trauma Training Center and Resilience Through Relationships Center at University of Massachusetts Medical School.
