Announcements
This month, LTER Network News moves to Mailchimp, from all-LTER listserv. This is part of a transition to LTER Hub, our new community platform, that will roll out gradually to different groups over the next few months.  For now, know that you can now update subscription and delivery preferences for LTER Network News (monthly, internal focus), LTER Science Update (quarterly, external focus), DataBits (semi-annual, IM-focused), and our jobs and opportunities listing from a single subscription page.

The LTER Network now has a
LinkedIn page! We are shifting our presence from Facebook to LinkedIn to keep up with community trends and better serve the network. Be sure to follow our LinkedIn page and tag or link to us when appropriate. We look forward to sharing future stories and opportunities via LinkedIn, and you can still find us active on Twitter and Instagram.

A new metajam R package is now available on CRAN, geared towards scientists who want to use data from DataONE while leveraging the metadata information in R. It builds on the dataONE API and R package, currently supports EML metadata and has been tested on KNB, ADC and EDI repositories. For more: https://nceas.github.io/metajam/

The Ecological Society of America is pleased to partner with the US Geological Survey to offer summer internships to outstanding field-trained undergraduates for the 2021 season. Selected applicants will be offered internships at available field, laboratory, or office related scientific positions throughout the country for up to 5 months. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, some internships may be conducted remotely. Nominations for 2021 are now open. Please nominate students by Nov 18, 2020.

Proposal submissions are open for ESA's Annual Meeting August 1-6 for Symposia, Organized Oral Sessions, and Inspire Sessions. The meeting theme is " Vital Connections in Ecology". Proposals must be submitted through the online form by November 19, 2020, at 5:00 PM Eastern Time (2:00 Pacific Time). If you have any questions, please contact Program Chair Sarah Emery or Meeting Program Associate Jennifer Riem.

In addition, Courtney Currier (courtney.currier@asu.edu) is helping to organize a physical and virtual exhibit space at ESA for sharing music, visual art, performance, theatre, film, poetry, and art in other mediums. The effort aims develop greater understanding of how the artistic and scientific processes work in tandem or in parallel, and to highlight artists whose work can offer new ideas to ecology or who may be interested in collaborating with members at ESA. For more details, and to apply to exhibit, contact Courtney.

The NSF funded EFI Research Coordination Network (EFI-RCN) announces the launch of its inaugural NEON Ecological Forecast Challenge with the goal to create a community of practice that builds capacity for ecological forecasting by leveraging NEON data products. The Challenge includes 5 themes and is open to any individual or team that wants to submit forecasts and includes categories for different career stages. Register to submit forecasts HERE. Forecast submissions are accepted daily, February 1-July 1, 2021.

Stop giving early and late seasons the 'cold shoulder'

A new Arctic LTER publication led by Dr. Arial Shogren identifies key knowledge and data gaps that limit understanding of Arctic ecosystem structure and function. The team argues that expanding data collection further into the ‘shoulder seasons’ (early spring and late fall) is critical to developing more accurate carbon budgets and climate change models.
