ISA ONLINE NATIONAL COMPETITION

Skating is not over for 2020, with the Team NSW performances for the ISA Online National Competition to be held on 5th and 6th December at Macquarie Ice Rink. This ISA Benchmark competition will give participants the opportunity to compete against skaters in other states despite border restrictions.
We were pleased to be able to nominate skaters for Team NSW to participate in the only national competition of 2020.
Team NSW performances will be videoed and submitted by NSWISA on behalf of the skaters. Officials nominated by ISA will score all the performances, and winners will be announced via the ISA website.
NSWISA will be recording the performances of the skaters on the weekend of the 5th and 6th, so coaches and family members can focus solely on their skaters.
Entries are by invitation only, and based on the results from the NSW State Championships. Congratulations to all those Members selected to represent NSW in this event, the only chance for skaters to represent NSW on the national stage in 2020. Entries close on 20th November, so please don't forget to register if you have been invited to represent NSW.
NSWISA is excited to see the culmination of all the hard work of the Team NSW skaters at this event and wish all participants and good luck for the competition!

ATHLETE TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT SURVEY
Planning has commenced for the NSWISA T&D program for 2021. NSWISA is seeking feedback from the athletes, parents, coaches, volunteers and stakeholders in our sport. Once the feedback has been compiled, NSWISA will look to build a meaningful T&D program which addresses the priorities of our stakeholders.

2020 CLUB EVENTS
Last month saw the last of our Club competitions for 2020 with the successful hosting of Triple Challenge by LCCISC. Congratulations to all of our Clubs for their successful hosting of their events and for their flexibility with the COVID requirements. Thank you for the way in which you communicated with NSWISA to provide a safe environment for all our skaters.
NSWISA is currently in the final stages of confirming the calendar for 2021 which will be released in the near future.
STRATEGIES TO DEVELOP A GROWTH MINDSET
In the August edition of NSWISA News, we shared an article on understanding what a growth mindset is. The following are strategies that you could implement to help develop your growth mindset in practice and competition:
  • Educate yourself about the difference between a growth and fixed mindset. Highlight the benefits of adopting a growth mindset in sport.
  • Check in on your mindset and try to switch to a growth mindset perspective if you identified that you have a fixed mindset approach.
  • Add “Yet” to your vocabulary. Remind yourself that whilst you may not have it yet, you will get there with effort, time and practice.
  • Learn from real life examples. Discover real-life examples of other athletes' growth over the years. For example, Michelle Kwan's journey as a 5-time World Champion and 2-time Olympic medalist.
  • Encourage yourself to take on a weekly challenge. Develop an action plan of how you will successfully complete the challenge. Build your confidence at tackling challenging situations; so practice weekly.
  • Reframe mistakes and failures by viewing them as learning experiences. Remind yourself how important failure and mistakes are in the growing process. Mistakes are a necessity so that we can learn, grow, and reach our potential.
  • Accept learning and growth based feedback. Accept praise and feedback which is focused on learning and growing rather than outcomes. Avoid making comparisons with other athletes as it is more beneficial for you to compare your last performance with the current one. Focus on the improvement of specific elements, rather than just winning.
  • Pay attention to what you criticise. If you want to emphasise a growth mindset, criticise your lack of effort and discipline, not your ability.
  • Develop a process orientated outlook. Focus on your action plan and the effort you're putting in to achieve an outcome. This will help to keep you focused and in the moment.
  • Self-reflection is essential for growth. Debrief with your coach after each training session or competition. What worked? What didn’t? Develop an action plan to make this better.
When implementing these strategies just focus on 2-3 of the strategies listed above at a time.

TESTS
NSWISA is aware there are many skaters who are working hard to achieve their next test level. There have been some opportunities since the skating resumed to take tests, although given the disjointed season, the timing of these tests have not suited for some skaters. NSWISA is looking to provide some test sessions before the end of the year, and will seek to provide ample opportunities in 2021 for skaters to test and work towards the goals they and their coaches have set.
Just a reminder, for those who bypassed their pattern test to take their technical test as outlined by ISA Communication 113, the pattern test will need to be taken before they compete in 2021.
VOLUNTEERING AT NSWISA SANCTIONED EVENTS
No event can be held without the efforts of our volunteers. Through volunteering, our skating families are able to connect with others who share the same interest and passion for the sport. We are fortunate that we have a very dedicated volunteer group, however, we are always looking for more volunteers to ease the workload of our regular volunteers at events. NSWISA requires its volunteers to have a WWCC number to ensure that our sport is prioritising the safety of our young people. A WWCC number lasts for a period of 5 years and can be applied for at Service NSW.
In order to verify the status of a volunteer, the organising committee will need the surname, the WWCC number and the date of birth. Having this information handy will make the organisation much easier for the organisers of events and will ensure that our sport will be providing a safe environment for our skaters.
