Madibaland
World Literary Festival
Communiqué #01
November 14, 2020

Don’t Frack with Our Karoo™

A Booktown Richmond / University of the Western Cape Project

Building a nation from words

It always seems impossible…until its done. These immortal words, by Nelson Mandela, have been playing on my mind these last few days. To think that we announced the idea of such a festival at the end of April – and now 6 months later, we have curated the world’s largest online literary festival – leaves me with a smile that stretches into 2021. I know the festival has not taken place yet, but I feel we are well prepared and only an Eskom blackout that plunges the entire country into darkness can scupper our well-laid plans.

I want to thank all the writers who have given of their time so selflessly to make this the greatest international book festival to emerge out of SA. I want to pay tribute to my university, the University of the Western Cape, who are partnering us on this project, especially my Dean Prof Nomlomo and Acting Dean Prof Govender,  for tolerating a colleague with his head in the clouds, Graham Julies from the IT division and Umesh Bawa and his team from the Institutional Advancement Office at UWC. I also want to thank Peter Baker from Book Town Richmond for his ‘lets do it’ attitude and Hendrik Mentz, who volunteered his life…literally, to put writers profiles and this programme up on our website. It was a mountain of work.

Now all we need is for the bibliophiles, the book lovers to come out in their numbers and make this the most unforgettable book festival in SA in the year of the plague. Let the beauty of the written and spoken word wash over you and heal you, better than any pharmaceutical vaccine ever can.

Oh, and did I mention we still need volunteers to sit in on sessions to keep an eye that Zoom keeps zooming writers to our screens. And for those who would like to introduce writers at a session or three – we need you, simply so that I can eat and go to the loo a few times over these 9 days.

Thank you once more, and may the literary gods smile upon us
