DBS Students Select New Middle-Grade Book Award
The Vermont State Library is pleased to announce “The Vermont Golden Dome Book Award” as the new name for Vermont’s children’s-choice middle-grade book award (formerly Dorothy Canfield Fisher Book Award). Almost 5,800 Vermont students participated in the final voting process. Students in grades 4-8 submitted names for the award in the spring of 2020. The winning entry came from an entire class at the Dothan Brook School in White River Junction, via their school librarian Tessa Johnson.
“The fourth-grade class worked together to brainstorm ideas for a new name. The Golden Dome Award won the vote,” said Johnson. “We are so excited that it won the vote across the state as well!” Putting the renaming process into the hands of students gave them the opportunity to examine what the award means to them.
“We believe the process encouraged conversations across Vermont on how to best represent the essence of the award, to ensure its relevancy during this point in history, and support its mission to develop students’ love of reading,” said State Librarian Jason Broughton. “We see the three book awards the Department of Libraries sponsors as a wonderful way to introduce new readers to books and to connect young readers to authors, and to develop an appreciation for writing.”
The Department thanks all students who submitted names and voted, as well as the teachers, librarians, and parents who helped facilitate the process. We also want to thank the members of the committee, including three fantastic student representatives for their time and input over the last few months. Members of the committee are the student representatives Addy Eldred, Jonah Libens-Mavodones, and Mia Pasco, as well as the adult members Arlyn Bruccoli, Jonathan Clark, Caitlin Classen, Kate Davie, Deborah Ehler-Hansen, Kathleen Finn, Jennifer Johnson, Amy McMullen, Hannah Peacock, Bruce Post, Hannah Prescott, and Janette Shaffer.
