The creation of a new Government of Ontario financial literacy committee was announced today, and it will be chaired by Tyler Fleming, Director of the Investor Office at the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC).

The Ontario Intragovernmental Committee on Financial Literacy (ICFL) is being established to strengthen the collaboration and dialogue amongst provincial ministries and agencies on initiatives and opportunities to improve financial literacy in Ontario. It will bring together ministries and agencies from across government to facilitate an integrated approach that seeks to embed financial literacy in provincial programs, policies and training. “COVID-19 highlights the importance of ensuring people have the tools they need to manage their finances and make personal financial choices that work for them and their families,” Minister of Finance Rod Phillips said in the announcement. “Improving the financial literacy of the people of Ontario will help foster growth, create jobs and long-term prosperity that will help improve their financial well-being during the pandemic and beyond.

The Committee will collaborate to embed financial literacy in provincial programs, policies and training across various agencies and ministries. Learn more

OSC 2021-2022 Statement of Priorities

The Ontario Securities Commission is seeking comment on its draft 2021-2022 Statement of Priorities to inform its business planning for the 2021-2022 fiscal year. The document sets out the priority initiatives the OSC will pursue in support of its four strategic goals, which are to: promote confidence in Ontario’s capital markets; reduce regulatory burden; facilitate financial innovation; and strengthen the OSC’s organizational foundation. COVID-19 Fraud Alerts

Watch our COVID-19 fraud alert video series. Fraudsters are exploiting the fear surrounding economic conditions and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fake government messages. Be careful of fraudsters posing as government agencies or departments by text or email.

Financial representative impostors. Be on alert for fraudsters posing as your bank or investment firm advisor.

Quick High-Return Schemes. Fraudsters are targeting people experiencing financial hardship from COVID-19 with quick high-return schemes based outside of Canada.

Pump-and-dump scams. This is a type of investment fraud where fraudsters artificially increase the price of a stock that they own by encouraging other investors to buy it. 

Work from home scams. Be on alert for fraudsters offering fake job opportunities.

OSC in the Community

OSC in the Community is an outreach program that takes the OSC's regulatory mandate from Bay Street to Main Street. OSC staff travel to communities across Ontario to talk to people about making informed financial decisions and avoiding investment fraud.

To protect the health and safety of the public and staff, all OSC in the Community events will be delivered online or by phone until further notice. We will continue to monitor the situation and follow guidance from public health authorities.
