Kitchen Chronicles: Design Evolutions

In 2012, we identified some life-expectancy issues with Ekone's beloved Yummy Tummy Cafe (aside from significant overcrowding and decibel levels).

In 2015, we got serious about replacing the building with one that will serve our growing programs with grace, nourish the coming generations of Ekone kids, and have enduring structural integrity. (And permits!)

Now, five years, a new road, a lodge foundation, a bunkhouse, and a million dollars later, we are finally READY!
This beautiful rendering has been inspiring and beckoning to us for five years. The result of careful planning, many voices, and a thousand details. You're probably familiar with these evocative sketches--they have been central to the storytelling for so long!
Over the past five years of working in the old Yummy Tummy and looking at these sketches, we've kept a running wish list of things we want (more sinks! more storage!) and don't want (fewer bottlenecks, decibels, and rattlesnakes) in the new kitchen. We also identified some things that the 2015 plans didn't account for, like shaded outdoor seating.
So as soon as the Bunkhouse was complete this summer, we took a deep breath and leaped into the next round of design work for "Yummy Tummy Two," building on the original plans and incorporating our running wish list, with the help of Russ and Brandon, the architects of Studio Hamlet.
The architect alchemy has transformed our original plans, evolving wish list, arm waving, and long discussions of Ekone's programs, values, aesthetics, and practical needs into the next evolution of design work.

We're so excited to share it with the world!!
This is just a teaser--and we've already changed a bunch of things from this preliminary site plan.  What we'd REALLY like to do is give you a guided tour!

Please join us for an Ekone community gathering and tour of the new Kitchen and Bathhouse plans, on Zoom, on one of these dates.

December 1, 6pm
December 2, 6pm
December 3, 6pm
December 6, 6pm

Spaces are limited; RSVP Here to hold yours and get the zoom link!

We look forward to seeing you online, and ushering this building into existence together.
Our design team met over this past glorious weekend to "ground-truth" the initial plans.  Standing in the site, "walking through" the building, and imagining it bursting with friends was so exciting.  We made a bunch of changes - which we'll tell you all about on the zoom call!
We're still planning on breaking ground in the spring of 2021 with occupancy in 2022, pandemic and all.

The journey of Covid-19 has just confirmed and emphasized the vital importance of what happens at Ekone Ranch.  The experience of inclusive community, deep connection to place, and all the natural learning that is available here--this kind of experience is essential to our health and happiness, and brings out the best of us.  The world needs our best, and Ekone needs to be ready to provide healing, fortitude, and skills in the aftermath of Covid and the challenges beyond.

So yes, we're moving forward.
With the tremendous accomplishment of the Bunkhouse under our belts, and such an amazing community of people who believe in Ekone's work, we're pretty dang sure we'll succeed.
We'll sure need you to stick with us to make it happen, though.  It's definitely a weird time to be halfway through a capital campaign, and your continued support will be essential to keeping Saddle Up! on the trail.  You can always make a donation Here, to the address below, or by reaching out for a conversation.

That's enough for today--but we'll be in touch again soon, with more details about where we're at in the fundraising portion of the Saddle Up! adventure, what's coming next, and what we need help with.
Be safe and brave out there, dears. We'll be enjoying a meal together before we know it. Meanwhile, we wish you inspiring and hopeful projects to usher you into winter.
