Remember that if you need community assistance, the latest and most complete information is available at 211 (24 hours per day and 7 days per week). The news coverage of the world is upsetting and fluid.  If you need to speak with someone, call 211 and let them know you need to speak with a professional. They are there to help.  See below for what else they do!

Judy & Blair
Still miss you.

Be a Santa to a Senior is back, pandemic style!

Askennonia members have supported this programs for 9 years, helping Home Instead Senior Care to make sure that no senior goes without a gift to open Christmas morning. Usually we'd have over 100 tags on our tree, each one with a first name and gift suggestion for a local senior.  This year, they have gone virtual.

The virtual Be a Santa to a Senior Program will run from Nov 12 to Dec 12, 2020.
Go to www.beasantatoasenior.com and put in your postal code or city to view local seniors who risk not getting a gift this year. You will then see a suggested gift that can be purchased through Amazon.

How It Works Recognizing the program’s increased importance this year and the need to keep everyone involved safe, Home Instead have collaborated with Amazon Business for the first time to facilitate the purchasing and distribution of gifts on the Wish Lists of local seniors. Shoppers can purchase the gift, include a personal holiday greeting, and have the gift sent directly to the senior.

Thanks for your support!

2020 RENEWALS AND NEW MEMBER REGISTRATION
2120 RENEWALS WILL BE ACCEPTED ONCE WE OPEN.

The Board of Directors has decided to extend the membership of all existing 2020 paid up members until the Centre is able to safely open.  This will be sometime after the new year.  At that time the Board will determine the renewal price.

We have had many enquiries from people wanting to join as new members.  New memberships paid now will cover 2020 and all of 2021.  People are interested in the virtual, outdoor and Wye Marsh programs.  The cost will be $50.

At this point, the only way we can safely accept payment is by cheque via mail.  If you print off the registration form above or access it on our website and mail it to us, we will register you, make your membership card and mail it back to you.  You need the card to show at Wye Marsh and any other opportunities we are able to line up for you.

We would appreciate if existing 2020 members wait until we reopen or have an online solution to renew.  We'll provide updates as soon as they become available.

TRY ANY OF THESE FREE OF CHARGE!
These days, the more opportunities to access online programs to exercise your body, mind and spirit, the better!  We have purchased a 3 month licence for our members to try a variety of daily online programs.  "Art Your Service" offers 10 weekly one hour classes on Zoom; one in the morning at 10 am and one in the afternoon.  They are all designed for older adults and hope to add a little music, art, exercise, laughter and learning into your day.  If you or someone you know would like to try out Art Your Service, you simply email the owner, Jen Tindall at jen@artyourservice.org .(Click on the email or, you can reply to this email and I'll forward your info to Jen.)  You will receive an email every morning reminding you of the day's programs with the link to the zoom classes. You can chose whether to attend or not.  You can also cancel your 'subscription' at any time. Have a look and see if anything tickles your fancy.  Give it a try!  It's not going to cost you anything!

WYE MARSH NEWS!

Lots of our members are enjoying walks at the Wye Marsh.  They are having fun with the chickadees, chipmunks, squirrels and swans!  See all our pictures on Facebook, by clicking HEREWe visited the birds of prey, the swans, the boardwalk and look-out over the marsh.

Our next outing is planned for Tuesday Nov 24 at 1:00 with Blair and Friday, Nov 27 at 10 am, when we will again meet up with Midland Ganaraska Hiking Club leaders Frieda and Marilyn for a guided hike.  We ask that people meet in the parking lot, assemble in groups of 9 to enter the Visitor Centre showing your Askennonia ID, that one person from each group provide his or her name at Wye Marsh reception and that you tour the trails as a group. We ask that groups leave ten minutes between entrances.  Once everyone is comfortable with the trails, it would be better if people made their own small groups, as large groups are difficult for Wye Marsh.

We will continue with social walks and try to build in some fun add-ons over the winter.  Due to the nature of the activity, once we enter the Marsh, participants are aksed to use the buddy system and will be responsible for letting themselves out.  This is restricted to paid members of Askennonia with cards.

We are looking into several new programs that will allow members to stay socially and physically active. If you have any ideas, please reply to this email.  Let us know what you think.

Living your Best Life with Arthritis!

LIVE and ONLINE

Thursday, December 3 at 7:30 PM

Are you having trouble getting out of a chair or walking up the stairs in your home?  Are pain and stiffness in your joints limiting your ability to do the things you want to do?
If you answered yes, to either of these questions, you will be interested in the next “Our Health” event where our panel of experts will show you how to manage your symptoms and improve your quality of life through therapeutic exercise, physical activity and joint replacement surgery.
Osteoarthritis (OA) affects one in six Canadians. It is a chronic disease which causes pain, stiffness, swelling and decreased movement in the hips, knees, fingers, toes or spine resulting from the body’s failed attempt to repair damaged joint tissue.
This event will be broadcast LIVE at 7:30 PM on December 3, 2020 and will be available on Rogers tv channel 53 (Midland, Tay and Penetanguishene only). For those with smart phones, tablets or computers with a Wi-Fi connection, you can view online at www.rogerstv.com/midland. Click on the "watch now window" on the left-hand side of the screen. This link works from anywhere in the world and does not require a Rogers subscription to access.
Because the MCC is currently closed, no registration is required.

Previous our health videos are available on demand here
