Ngā tūranga taiao ki Waikanae -

Waikanae Jobs For Nature:

The mauri of Waikanae has always been of great importance to our iwi. It is our whakapapa to this area: Ko tōku Waikanaetanga tēnei. But over the past generation, the mauri of the awa has been diminished and it is crying out for our help. The recent announcement of $8.5 million dollars of Covid-19 Jobs for Nature funding will help to fund the implementation of our Ātiawa ki Whakarongotai Kaitiakitanga Plan over the next four years. Supporting our journey towards restoring the Waikanae awa to a place of mauri ora.

On the 19th of November 2020, the Minister of Conservation Kiritapu Allan announced that 92 jobs will be created, to help support environmental restoration in the Waikanae River catchment. Due to the Waikanae Jobs for Nature (WJ4N) Project taking a partnered Tiriti-based approach, half of these positions will be made available to iwi, creating 46 new jobs over the next four years for iwi. This pūtea will support environmental restoration in the Waikanae awa, specifically focussed on riparian fencing and planting; animal and plant pest control; sustainable land management - good land use and land management practice; and community engagement, education, and capacity building.

These job opportunities will not only have direct benefits on the mauri of the awa itself, but will also create a vocational pathway for uri to reconnect to our awa and our whenua, and stand confidently as kaitiaki. There will be integrated provision of engagement, involvement, training, and employment. This ensures that iwi and the wider community can enter the programme at different levels; learn and understand what is required and what is possible, see if the mahi suits them; and build their involvement, skills, and employment options over time.
A big mihi to those of you who have already registered your interest in this mahi. We will be sending out a follow up email asking for further details, including a copy of your CV. On the ground work will be getting underway rapidly, so please don’t hesitate to contact us if you or anybody in your whānau are interested in working in a dynamic environment working towards restoring the mauri of our awa.
Please email wkukt@teatiawakikapiti.co.nz if you want to engage in this opportunity to work as a kaitiaki on the awa.

*We are urgently seeking somebody to take up a full-time Iwi Project Coordinator role. This role will work closely with our Tiriti partners to ensure that all mahi is aligned with our kaupapa and huanga outlined in our Kaitiakitanga Plan. If this sounds like something you might be interested in, please contact Aaria directly on 021 023 93260.
