Please click on the relevant section above to view specific information

1. COVID-19 vaccination
You will be aware that the CCGs across Coventry and Warwickshire are working closely with PCN Clinical Directors on the COVID-19 vaccination rollout. PCN based covid vaccination sites are currently being identified and assessed and designated this week.  Further information on the enhanced service is expected shortly.

2. LeDer programme - action from learning: deaths of people with a learning disability from COVID-19
Please see the attached action from learning response to learning from deaths of people with a learning disability (LeDeR) review of COVID pandemic deaths.

The University of Bristol have produced a report looking at the deaths of 200 people with a learning disability who died between 2 March and 9 June 2020. NHS England and Improvement (NHSEI) have published a response to that report in the action from learning review. NHSEI will be working with system partners to carry out the actions outlined in their report and have published useful guidance and resources to help the system with those actions.

3. Flu letter from Dr Lakhani
Dr Lakhani has written to GPs and STP leads to thank them for their efforts in this year's flu vaccination programme, and to ask that practices maximise all efforts now to immunise those left and to concentrate specifically on Care Home residents and at-risk adults under 65 years of age including pregnant women. You can read the letter here

We are still awaiting a national announcement regarding the vaccination of the age 50-64 year olds.

4. Hot Hubs - what to consider before referring and information for patients

Some communications has been developed for GPs and aimed at patients.  A brief one page 'Questions to consider before considering a referral to a Hot Hub' for GPs can be be found here and information to give you your patients explaining what a Hot Hub is, can be found here.

5. Flu vaccination reminder letters sent in error to individuals with a history of glandular fever
Sarah Wilkinson, Chief Executive Officer at NHS Digital, has written to GPs to apologise for an error that has occurred in the identification of the cohort of patients for whom flu vaccinations are recommended, and to let you know what actions are being taken to rectify this situation and the impact this may have on GP Practices. You can read the letter here

6. A message from the Safeguarding Team
During this second lockdown, where we know the incidents of domestic abuse increase, please can Practices consider supporting Refuge and the IRIS team by allowing them to meet clients in the Practice, if they are asked and it is possible. Whilst we don’t envisage there will be many requests for this, it may be necessary when all other limited options have been explored. Thank you.

7. Mental Capacity Assessment flowsheet
Please find attached as an aide memoir, a Mental Capacity Assessment flowsheet for your use.

8. UHB update: planned procedures postponement announcement
All planned procedures at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham have been postponed due the significant increase in the number of very sick patients (COVID and non-COVID) admitted to our hospitals as an emergency. Gynaecology procedures at Good Hope Hospital have also been paused.

This is an extremely difficult decision and has not been taken lightly. We know that affected patients will be distressed and upset with this decision, and for this we can only apologise. However, we must ensure that all those needing urgent care are able to access treatment safely.

Cancer treatment and life-saving care will remain our priority. All patients affected by this announcement will be contacted individually to rearrange their postponed surgery.

More information, including FAQs, can be found on the UHB website.

The annual Prevent Conference will take place on 23rd November at 9.30am - 12.45pm. This year the conference will be online. The conference provides leading expert guidance on key issues currently facing the Prevent agenda. The key areas of focus this year will be:-

  • The impact of radicalisation within families and how to engage and support vulnerable individuals who may be engaging with extremist influences,
  • Looking at the issues of mental health, well-being and Prevent,
  • Considering the changing threat and risk from Right Wing Terrorism, and
  • Looking at Contextual Safeguarding as a means of assessing vulnerabilities and potential for grooming and exploitation.

We are hugely fortunate to have secured the contribution of a fantastic range of speakers to address these issues, and this should be a genuinely engaging and informative event which will be delivered online. It will be directly relevant to colleagues from across all of the agencies covered by the Prevent Duty, in particular representatives from Health & Social Care, Local Authority, Policing, Fire, and Education, as well as those in Voluntary, Faith and Community sectors.
