NIH “All About Grants” Podcast – Human Subjects’ Protection and Monitoring Plans

You’ve done your homework: read the requisite materials on human subjects, spoken with program staff at NIH, even listened to Part 1 of this podcast mini-series for some insights on how you know you are actually doing human subjects’ research. Now you’re ready to explain in your NIH grant application how research participants will be protected and monitored.

Dawn Corbett, NIH’s Inclusion Policy Officer, shares why human subjects’ protection and monitoring plans are important in this next NIH’s All About Grants podcast (MP3 / Transcript). We will discuss what should be included in these plans as part of your application, what should be left out, what are risks and what are benefits to study participants, how reviewers assess it all, and so much more.

NIH Public Access Compliance Monitor

The NIH Public Access Compliance Monitor (PACM) provides an institution with the current compliance status of all journal articles that are associated with the institution that fall under the NIH Public Access Policy. This database is provided as a service to our awardees to help them track compliance, should they wish to use it. Check out the PACM User Guide to learn more.

Significant Changes to Revised NSF Terms and Conditions

The following sets of NSF Award Conditions have been updated for consistency with the revised 2 CFR §200, Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards.

  • Grant General Conditions (GC-1)

  • Cooperative Agreement Financial and Administrative Terms and Conditions (CAFATC)

  • Cooperative Agreement Modifications and Supplemental Financial and Administrative Terms and Conditions for Major Multi-User Research Facility Projects and Federally Funded Research and Development Centers.

The revised terms and conditions will apply to all new NSF awards and funding amendments to existing awards made on or after November 12, 2020.

As we are all becoming more familiar with accessing and updating the Post Award Metrics via the SharePoint folders, we thought we would share some helpful tips.

  • If you are unable to access the SharePoint folder for your Department/Center please contact Kay at Ksulliva@hsph.harvard.edu for access.

  • You can access the folder through outlook by finding "Post Award Metrics Monitoring” under the "Groups” folder and selecting the “files” icon in the toolbar.

  • You can also access SharePoint through webmail. Click on the waffle at the top left, and select the SharePoint Icon.

Once you have accessed the SharePoint folder, you can always bookmark the folder in your web browser for easy access.

SPA Holiday Schedule and Internal Proposal Deadlines

With the start of November, the holiday season will soon be upon us. SPA would like to remind grant administrators that the upcoming holidays will alter our work schedule. Plan ahead to avoid missing the SPA Internal Proposal Deadlines and the Provost’s 5-day deadline for proposals meeting Provost Criteria

As soon as you are aware of an upcoming proposal, please create the GMAS Request shell, even if you plan to complete the full shell at a later date. The creation of the GMAS shell will allow SPA to see the volume of proposals and plan for the appropriate SRA coverage. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your SRA as soon as possible.

DMP 101: Introduction to Data Management Plans

Date: Thursday, November 12, 2020, 1:00pm to 1:30pm, Register

Description:

Research Data Management Online Short-Seminar

Many key granting organizations, like NSF, NIH, NEH and more, now require submitters to include a Data Management Plan (DMP) as part of their application. In short, these plans outline the best practices in data management that you will apply throughout the course of your grant. By creating a data management plan for your data at the beginning of the project, you save time and effort later on.

This session will provide an overview of the components of typical data management plans.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn what a data management plan is

  • Understand why data management plans are important

  • Review example data management plan language

  • Receive resources and contacts for future help

DMP 102: Introduction to Data Management Plans

Description:

Research Data Management Advanced Online Seminar

Writing a Data Management Plan (DMP) may be required as part of your grant application, but it is also best practice for any research project! Building off of DMP 101: Introduction to Data Management Plans this session will dive deeper into what a fundable DMP looks like and get you started writing your own plan with a hands-on activity

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand what makes a good data management plan

  • Review example data management plan language

  • Navigate DMPTool to help write, share and download a grant ready DMP

  • Receive resources and contacts for future help

Cite it Right! Footnotes, Endnotes, and Manuscript Preparation

Date: Tuesday, November 17, 2020, 1:00pm to 1:50pm, Register

Description:

This workshop will focus on avoiding some common problems that can arise when writers do not cite their sources properly. Join us for an interactive workshop where we consider how and when to integrate information from other research articles and discuss why this must be combined with an understanding of how to appropriately acknowledge the work of others. Plagiarism has more than one flavor and can be done unintentionally. We will discuss how to avoid this serious problem by recognizing what triggers it.

Note: This is not a workshop focusing on the mechanics of particular citation styles; rather, it is a broader conversation about the purpose and importance of citations and the critical roles they play in our research and our writing.

Clinical Trials: Creating and Updating Your Record

Date: Tuesday, November 17, 2020, 2:00pm to 3:00pm, Register

Description:

This session will discuss reasons and avenues for clinical trial reporting, with a focus on ClinicalTrials.gov. We will learn about what studies are required to be registered and/or have results reported, along with tools and resources for trial registration and reporting in the ClinicalTrials.gov system. We will also discuss tips and tricks for keeping records up to date and compliant.
