Welcome to the November Issue of Mizzou Grad & Postdoc News.
Oddly, this semester has managed to feel both really long and incredibly short at the same time. No matter what speed the semester has progressed for you, many will soon receive your hard-earned degrees. I hope that when we can do so safely, you will return to campus to celebrate with us in person.
For those of you graduating, I hope you took advantage of some of the workshops the Graduate School offered about formatting dissertations and theses, completing the necessary paperwork, and joining the Canvas organization where you can upload your theses or dissertations. Click here for more information. You can also contact our office if you have any other questions. We are happy to assist you.
I also encourage you to complete outcome surveys — doctoral students will complete the Survey of Earned Doctorates, and master’s and specialist students will receive a survey after our virtual celebration on December 18, 2020. Your input helps us make diverse career outcomes visible and valued. Mizzou graduates go on to do amazing things.
Speaking of surveys, if you have not already done so, please take 15-20 minutes to complete the Graduate and Professional Student Experience survey. The survey was sent out recently and will remain open until December 4. The data will inform professional development and advocacy efforts. Read more in the Survey section of this newsletter.
Finally, take time to give thanks to your families, friends, mentors, peers, and all of those who support you in your graduate studies and postdoctoral research. We know that this time of year can bring celebrations and joy. It may also be lonely and stressful. No matter what it brings, know that there are resources to support you. Be kind to yourself and others during this time and always.

Master's student Santiago Beis reflects on his transition to a graduate program abroad during a pandemic and the support he continues to receive from faculty and staff at Mizzou's School of Music. The program is providing him with opportunities to grow as a composer and as a music teacher. Santiago shares about the Sinquefield Foundation competition and upcoming opportunities to write new music for MU's ensembles and the New York Philharmonic.

The Missouri Local Science Engagement Network is hosting a science communication training session. Help us elevate the role of science in public policy discussions. We’re asking Missouri scientists and climate advocates to join us on December 3rd, December 17th, and January 7th for the training series provided by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Those interested will be required to participate in all three sessions, commit to the engagement goals of the series, develop a science/policy communications piece, follow through with their specific engagement, and provide us with feedback and insights about how it went. Naomi will represent the University of Missouri at the Midwest regional 3MT competition, which will be held virtually in March 2021.
We had a terrific virtual event with 12 doctoral students from various disciplines – they had just one slide and three minutes to explain their research to a public audience. We congratulate all of our participants this year, and thank them for an impressive, engaging, and enjoyable competition. We also thank our four esteemed judges for their time and expertise. Information about our 2021 competition will be available in the spring semester.

Library Support for Dissertation Searches

The Libraries have made the difficult decision to cancel their subscription to ProQuest Dissertation & Theses (PQD&T) after it expires on 11/30/2020 due to budget cuts, low usage, and alternative search options. Alternative search options include:
In addition, many of their subject databases index dissertations; a few examples: Sociological Abstracts, LION, CINAHL, GeoRef, MathSciNet, Econlit, Compendex, Philosophers Index.
Librarians are ready to assist with dissertation searching and the literature review process. Contact your subject librarian to set up a consultation.

Teaching online in Fall 2021?

If you are a continuing student and will be a graduate instructor or a postdoctoral teaching scholar who will teach online, our accreditors require that you complete certification. To assist you in determining what you need to do to complete the certification, view the video above.

In addition, there is a new option for the Online Teaching Certification Seminar for Graduate Instructors/Teaching Assistants that will last for 12 weeks instead of six, which means participants will have a one week on, one week off when completing the seminar. Registration is now open and will stay open for each session until the Monday before the session begins. This seminar is listed as 1a and will begin January 11.

The ITAP Advisory Board was created in the fall of 2018. The board acts as an integral part of decision-making processes for the ITAP program. In addition, board members bridge the gaps between the ITAP program and international graduate students, academic department faculty and administration, and the undergraduate experience. The advisory board has provided valuable input into several ITAP policies, including the assessment appeals process and language exemptions.

Boren Fellowships
Boren Fellowships provide U.S. graduate students with the resources and encouragement they need to acquire skills and experiences in areas of the world critical to the future security of our nation, in exchange for their commitment to seek work in the federal government. Students at the master’s and the doctoral level are eligible to apply. Fellowships provide support for overseas or domestic study, or a combination of both. Click here for more information.

Graduate Fellowship for STEM Diversity
Open to all American citizens regardless of race or gender. GFSD's goal is to increase the number of American citizens with graduate degrees in STEM fields, emphasizing recruitment of a diverse applicant pool. It provides an annual $20,000 expense allowance, covers full tuition and required fees, portable to 125 research institutions.

University-related International Activities Policy Exception Request
|
|
In response to the current COVID-19 pandemic and the University of Missouri's continued suspension of all non-essential travel, students hoping to participate in University-related international activities must apply for and obtain approval from the Student Travel Abroad Review (STAR) Committee and the Office of the Provost.
To begin the process, students must first complete the Individual student international policy exception request, which has been updated to include considerations related to COVID-19, for review by the STAR Committee. The exception request form was designed for a variety of program types, Barbara Linderman can help with any questions. If the exception request is approved by the STAR Committee, approval from the Office of the Provost will be requested on the student's behalf by the International Programs office.

December 4: Deadline for submission of the M3/S3/D4 and thesis/dissertation (if applicable).
December 11: Deadline for submission of LATE graduation materials. Items will not be accepted after this date due to degree processing deadlines.
*LATE GRADUATION MATERIAL SUBMISSIONS will be accepted until 5 PM (CDT) on Friday, December 11. Late submissions will be processed in the order received after those meeting the deadline have been cleared. Students submitting materials after December 11 will be considered spring graduates.

The Application for Graduation opens on December 1! Please be aware that this is now a two-step process through the Graduate School and the University Registrar's Office (via MyZou). This will allow the Graduate School the opportunity to gather the necessary information for processing your degree and also allow you to verify and update your name and address quickly and easily.
