Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Just a quick reminder of our offerings for this term:

In this issue:

1. Primary Experiments: Teacher PL Workshops

After all of the disruption this year, we are finally running a series of 4-hour Zoom PL workshops for primary teachers. These workshops will help teachers devise and deliver science experiments and technology activities safely in an age appropriate fashion. To overcome the online nature of these workshop, attendees will be sent a list of basic and readily available materials to obtain from around the school in order to be able to perform the innovative experiments and activities remotely on the day. We will be conducting experiments and activities for Living World, Material World, Physical World, Earth & Space and Digital Technologies. In the process, we will also consider the many aspects of Working Scientifically, including risk assessment practices. All participants will walk away with resources for a variety of experiments and activities. Please click on the links below for further details and registration:
Completing Science Experiments for Kindergarten Teachers on 13 November 2020 will contribute 4 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 2.1.2 and 4.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

2. Stage 6: Teacher PL Workshops

Due to popular demand, we are running another series of Theory professional learning workshops for Y11 and HSC science teachers. These workshops are designed for teachers new to teaching any of the sciences plus those who would like to refamiliarise themselves with the content and background theory. These workshops will be 4-hour Zoom sessions with 30 minutes of breaks. All participants will walk away with new resources and ideas. INVESTIGATING SCIENCE  SCIENCE EXTENSION

Biology, EES and hopefully face-to-face teacher professional learning workshops in all subjects will resume in 2021, including hands-on experiments workshops.

Completing Theory for HSC Physics Teachers on 11 November 2020 will contribute 4 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 2.1.2 and 6.3.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

3. Y12 Student Workshops: How to Answer Exam-Style Questions

Again due to popular demand, we have designed a series of 2-hour Zoom workshops for the new Y12 students (i.e. old Y11, not those sitting HSC right now), to hear from experienced HSC markers on how to answer exam-style questions. These workshops are designed to give students a head start as they make the leap into the most important year of their school life. In these workshops, students will learn what to expect from the HSC exam in terms of what markers are looking for; the importance of understanding marking criteria and how they are used; language; breakdown of questions; Working Scientifically skills; extended response questions e.g. 9-markers; and how best to study to succeed in the exams. Most of the contexts of the workshops will be built around the respective Module 5s and the Working Scientifically skills. All students will walk away with a variety of resources including new sample questions and answers. Each workshop is $36.36+GST per student. Teachers can book multiple students via the links below. Accompanying teachers are free. Please click on the links below for further details and registration:

4. Young Scientist Finalists

Congratulations to all of the finalists in the Young Scientist competition! Best wishes in particular to two of the schools I work with who each have an age group finalist - fingers crossed for when they announce the winners next week. I will share the wonderful work by these students in the Term 1 newsletter.

5. Best of Luck to Students Sitting Their HSC!

Finally, we wish all HSC students the very best of luck as they finish their exams this week!
Kind Regards,
