ADVOCACY UPDATE

What is Paths for People advocating for right now?

In October 2020, Paths for People shared its vision for a win-win strategy to redesign Saskatchewan Drive. Our proposed plan created a safer, more liveable street and reduced the amount of resources required for rehabilitation of both Duggan Bridge and Saskatchewan Drive. We envisioned that this stretch of roadway could be rebuilt to one lane wide to reflect the re-allocated roadways we had this summer.

The City has indicated that they are interested in this new vision for Saskatchewan Drive as they move towards planning and design for this stretch of road. However, changes to Duggan Bridge are not feasible at this point in the project because the project is already out for tender.

Our Chair, Stephen Raitz, wrote an editorial in the Edmonton Journal arguing that "finding ways to save does not mean that we need to cut and slash projects. We need to reimagine how we do things as a city to grow and renew ourselves more efficiently and sustainably."

With the recent reduction to a 40 km/h speed limit approved at the start of November and the Safe Mobility Strategy coming forward at the start of December and the City of Edmonton capital and operating budget discussions following that, Paths for People is excited to continue pushing for safe and liveable streets for all Edmontonians.

In his free time, Yasin likes to read, bake, and roam the aisles of Costco.
