Community Alert

Dear Fellow Villagers,

We regret to report there has been a mugging in the Village.

Shortly after 8 p.m. on Saturday, November 7, two Hispanic males jumped out of a dark SUV on Wolcott Avenue near Newport Avenue.  There, they repeatedly slapped a 31-year-old woman who had been walking by herself, then stole her purse.  The suspects climbed back into their SUV, then escaped by driving the wrong way down Newport.

Fortunately, the victim was not seriously hurt and no one was injured by the fleeing felons.  The full story can be found at www.CWBChicago.com

Separately, the Chicago Police Department has issued a community alert due to a series of recent carjackings in Lincoln Park, Lakeview, and Uptown.

We all are our own First Responders. Experts recommend that, wherever you are, stay alert.  Keep your head on a swivel.  Know what’s around you, what’s approaching you, and what’s behind you.  Leave your phone in your pocket and leave at least one earbud out so you can hear approaching vehicles and people.  Have a plan, and consider what tools are at your disposal. A dispenser of high-quality pepper spray like POM or Sabre Red – in your hand, not buried in a backpack or a pocket or the bottom of a purse – is a powerful friend.

Stay safe,
